Finally Some Clarity! - Super Mario Bros. Two Player Hack Editing

31 August 2020 8:02AM EST - Update by Supergamerguy

Documents News - RHDN Project Page

After several weeks of painstaking trips wading through lines of code and forum posts trying to figure out how to edit the refactored code of the SMB1 Co-Op hack, Supergamerguy finally pieced together a general idea of how to make some changes to its code. He was able to figure a few things about palettes and how they relate to characters and enemies and particular, but the majority of his findings pertain to the Title Screen. Sadly, he was not able to get info on the top-right hand portion of the “Title Box”, but he was able to map out the locations of everything else. Supergamerguy hopes this benefits any hackers wishing to make their own changes to the game and eases the stress of everything else!

PAL HeroQuest Prototype Converted to NTSC

29 August 2020 2:45AM EST - Update by famiclone

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

HeroQuest, an adventure board game by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop, had multiple versions released on home computers. There was also a version in the works for the NES that was never commercially released.

Three prototypes of this NES version eventually leaked out to the internet: An early and mostly incomplete NTSC version, a later and almost complete PAL version, and the entire source code of a version that is supposedly in between (but not easily compiled). Famiclone took it upon himself to investigate the source code files and found that the PAL music was identical to a section found in the later PAL prototype. Fortunately, this could be easily replaced with the NTSC music that was also found in the source code. As a result, the game now plays normally on NTSC systems.

If you’ve ever wanted to play the game on NTSC systems without easily dying in the early prototype, or having to listen to music playing too fast, this will be the definitive version to play.

BS Fire Emblem, the Satellaview Fire Emblem title, translated

19 August 2020 9:50AM EST - Update by Darrman

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Saga was a game broadcast for Nintendo’s Satellaview peripheral. Players had one hour in order to defeat as many enemies as they could while fulfilling various objectives. Using the capabilities of the Satellaview’s Soundlink technology, voice acting could be streamed to players as the story unfolded. The game was divided into four episodes, each with different casts and goals to accomplish.

BS Fire Emblem was broadcast three times before vanishing into the mists of time. However, some enthusiasts managed to preserve the ROM data for each of the episodes. These did not contain the entirety of the original broadcasts; most notably, the opening illustrations and voice acting were missing. The gameplay itself was completely intact - only the presentation was affected.

Darrman, a Fire Emblem ROM hacker, was curious about BS Fire Emblem. He had worked on translating a hack of Mystery of the Emblem prior and noticed the two games were very similar. After he read up on how to calculate Satellaview checksums, the translation effort began. Work progressed rapidly as the majority of text could simply be reused from the previous hack translation.

And so, BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Saga, the long-overlooked Fire Emblem Satellaview spinoff, has been translated. With this, every single entry of the Fire Emblem series can be played from start to finish in the English language.

Final Fantasy 5 Spoof v1.10!

18 August 2020 12:26AM EST - Update by Tzepish

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Final Fantasy 5 Spoof has been updated to version 1.10!

Version 1.10 improves upon the previous release in several ways:

1.) Cool it with the offensive humor and “punching down”: If v1.00 was about applying the wisdom gained from age 15 to 25 to reduce the amount of crude humor in the spoof, v1.10 is about applying the wisdom gained from age 25 to 35 to reduce actual harm caused by the spoof. The writing isn’t flippant about serious issues this time.

2.) More consistent characterization: There were several places in the spoof v1.0 where the core four would break character in order to advance the plot a specific way or to make a particular joke. This time around, better solutions have been written that don’t require them to break character.

3.) More variety in humor and sentence structure: Several parts of the script were enhanced with foreshadowing, callbacks, clarity, or additional humor. Several sentences were also improved in subtle ways for increased impact.

4.) Feedback incorporated: Thank you to everyone who wrote reviews, lets plays, forum posts, and emails!

RPG “Spoofs” aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are at all interested, give this one a try! Hopefully it’ll make you chuckle (and hopefully it won’t make you angry)! Cheers!

It's for the Kids! - Super Wario Bros. 3 Censored Editon

15 August 2020 10:01AM EST - Update by Supergamerguy

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

The “family-friendly” alternative to Googie’s amazing original hack (Super Wario Bros. 3) is finally here! This addendum replaces all of Googie’s text changes with some different phrases that can appeal to a younger audience as well as a general one.

The idea first came from watching Blue Television Game’s (BTG) playthrough of it a few years ago and the desire to make a version that could appeal to his regular audience. Hope you guys find this helpful and a worthwhile redownload or replay!

Super Mario Kart - The Impala Battles updated

14 August 2020 8:20AM EST - Update by Ok Impala!

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

In 2002 Super Mario Kart - The Impala Battles was released. Back then it was the first Super Mario Kart mod to be released on Romhacking.net

It was the time long before Epic Edit saw the light of day, so editing Mario Kart was still a slow and difficult process. The limitations at the time caused some issues in The Impala Battles that couldn’t be solved.

Almost 18 years after the release of The Impala Battles, v1.1 finally fixes all the issues players had with the original mod. You can see this new version as a small appetizer to the release of Super Mario Kart - Epic Racers, which is nearing a finished state.

Until that release, please enjoy the classic Impala Battles once again with your friends!
