Lucky Number 7

24 December 2012 6:05PM EST - Update by Nightcrawler

Site News

RHDN is now 7 years old! The milestones continue to pile up:

  • Over 50 million unique visits
  • Near 11,000 community submissions
  • 500+ documents
  • 800+ utilities
  • 900+ Hacks
  • 1000 complete translations

We’re home to the largest and most talented global group of ROM hackers ever assembled! We have had representation on our forums from over 30 different countries! It’s hard for one place to contain all that intellect and not explode! I’m glad we haven’t, because the collective international talent here is by far our greatest strength. It’s unmatched anywhere else.

We’ve re-shaped ourselves over the past two years or so and grown into a more mature and stable community compared to some of our earlier days. I’m very happy with the site today and am proud to have created and grown the site into what it has become. I could not have done it without the help and contributions from all of our staff and community members. RHDN is a ship. Like any ship, it needs a well oiled crew to navigate the wild seas. Thanks goes out to all our RHDN sailors whom have helped me steer this ship straight and true to where we are today. Give yourselves a hand. Well done! *applauds*

Site development efforts this year were focused heavily on improving the user interface and quality of submissions. A new form engine, more uniform layouts, rewritten guidelines, improved validation, and inline errors have gone a long way in simplifying the submission (and approval) process. As a result, we have seen a marked improvement in the quality of output from from both staff and members. We also deployed a new caching engine that has continued to keep the site speedy and light on resources. We are always looking for ways to ‘do more with less’ to keep costs down. We will continue to improve as time allows in year 8. Some possibilities include AJAX search results, enhanced entry pages, in-line error improvements, and site layout changes. Time is our only limit.

Does it get any better than this? You bet it does! We continue to grow daily and become even more valuable as the greatest ROM hacking resource on the planet. Cheers to another great year!

The Beginning of the Legend of the Peach Boy

13 December 2012 11:44AM EST - Update by KingMike

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Today I have released a translation for The Legend of Peach Boy for the NES. It is a comical RPG, and the debut of one of Hudson’s mascots (be careful to not confuse this game with the spin-off board game Momotarou’s Railroad).

I’d be interested in doing the sequels to this, but right now the most likely looks to be the spin-off Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden. This one tells us the individual tales of three supporting characters from the first game. First released on Game Boy, then ported to the PCE and last, Famicom. I’d probably again do the FC version, which I believe was also the last developed released RPG for the console. I’ve already begun work on dumping the script.

As for the others:

  • Shin Momotarou Densetsu (SFC exclusive): script dumped. Big hurdle is menu work.
  • Momotarou Densetsu II (PCE and PS1): PS1 probably the best, but I’d really have a learning experience on my hands.
  • Momotarou Densetsu Turbo (PCE) is a remake of this game I’m releasing. I’d need to learn how to make a Huffman compresser, and it diverges enough from the FC version, so it’d probably need a re-translation as well.

Utilities News - RHDN Project Page

Full-sized picture here

FCEUX is a NES/FC/FDS emulator providing the most powerful toolset for TASing, debugging, romhacking, Lua scripting and more. The new release fixes a lot of bugs, adds support for new mappers and brings many new features.

Full changelog here

Debugger improvements:

  • Numerous usability enhancements
  • “CPU cycles” and “Instructions” counters, and respective breakpoints
  • Fixed and improved Symbolic debug (Names and Comments display)
  • Allow Frame Advancing when Debugger is in breakpoint state
  • Double-click on any address prompts “Add Breakpoint”
  • “ROM offsets” option
  • Bookmarks naming and quick adding with a single-click on any address

Trace Logger improvements:

  • “Symbolic trace” option
  • “RTS” instructions now output the subroutine address/name
  • “Use Stack Pointer for code tabbing (nesting visualization)” option
  • Additional logging options
  • Tracer now auto-updates its window when the user pauses the game

Code/Data Logger improvements:

  • Now can log data access from RAM code
  • “Save Unused Data” button
  • Now can also log graphics access

In addition, this version introduces the new tool called TAS Editor, which allows you to create deterministic scenarios of playing and thus test the game behavior.

Also, the debugging documentation was updated, describing all the new features as well as some old tricks, for example, how to create custom breakpoints and write automatic handlers for them using Lua scripting.
