Willow SRAM Hack

I’ve been working on a Willow ROM hack that will implement a save game feature into a game that previously used passwords. I’m doing this just to take a crack at NES hacking, and because I read somewhere that Willow was supposed to use battery backed RAM, but instead used a password system in order to cut production costs.
I also want to implement a feature to “skip” the dialog text and also a “run” button. Source code will be freely available to help anyone else out there looking to play around with the good old NES.
Currently, I have completed my Proof-of-concept hack, and I now have a Willow ROM that allows saving current progress by pressing SELECT-B and resuming the saved game by selecting PASS WORD in the opening screen, or CONTINUE after losing all your HP.
Puzzle Boy for the PCE.

Today I am releasing an English translation patch for the PC Engine version of Puzzle Boy.
Puzzle Boy is a block-pushing puzzle game you may remember on the Game Boy as Kwirk. (Though there was also an FDS version called Puzzle Boys. That is because the FDS and GB versions had you controlling multiple characters on some levels, while the PCE version seems to be entirely a solo effort.)
This is a small translation that I think went well for a test effort on doing a PCE translation. Along with some docs from David Shadoff on the forum, I was able to piece together a translation with mednafen and a tracer version of HuGo. Though I wouldn’t recommend playing the game with the latter. It should be complete, but a couple of the later levels got me, so I haven’t been able to finish the game. I also don’t know if the Com-link mode needs any additional translation (haven’t heard of any emulators supporting the TurboExpress cable).
Googie's Lolo 2 hack

It’s finally done. Thanks to those who encouraged me to finish this hack. All the levels are edited to add more of an action oriented feel to Lolo2. Lolo fans will get their fix with this hack. Scrubby OSX Sprite Viewer / Editor

Scrubby is a tool to (eventually) edit sprites and other data in ROM files for OSX. There’s wasn’t an all purpose tool for this for OSX and I missed YY-CHR so I started Scrubby. Scrubby currently supports the following ROM image types:
- Nintendo / Famicom Disk System (2BPP)
- Super Nintendo (3BPP, 4BPP, 8BPP*)
- Game Boy (2BPP)
Right now all you can really do is view sprite data and save it, but I am finishing up editing the data. So far:
- Display ROM sprite data
- Save sprite data (PNG)
- Edit Sprite Data
- Import Edited PNG File
- Add other image formats

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku

EFF's Patent Busters Take Aim at Nintendo's Handheld Emulation Patent

As part of it’s ongoing Patent Busting program targeting bogus patents, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a leading organization “defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights”, has included a patent held by Nintendo that covers the emulation of handheld gaming devices in it’s Top Ten Most Wanted list.
The patent is clearly aimed at restricting the development of emulators and related tools for handheld consoles, of which Nintendo’s Gameboy brand has the majority market share. This patent could have dire implications for the ROM hacking community as such software is of vital importance to the hacking of titles on these systems.
The EFF is seeking community contributions of prior art from before the May 27, 1999 filing date of the patent. Anyone with information regarding handheld emulation prior to this date can submit it to the EFF using a form at their website.
The EFF has been successful in overturning other bogus patents and is in the process of legal proceedings aimed at overturning more.
Utawarerumono Translation Released

The release is currently compatible with the PC DVD version.
There was already an update to patch 1.1, which fixes some small errors caused by an old line inserter.
