Rosy Robot Raises a Ruckus!

26 September 2019 9:07AM EST - Update by Josephine Lithius

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

In an undisclosed location of an unknown world… a robot was created in the shape of a lovely, human girl was created by unseen masters for the sole purpose of creating piles-and-piles of explosives. This robot wore a pink dress, pink gloves, and a pink helmet with a golden heart on the forehead. These traits quickly earned her a nickname among her peers: “Pretty Bomber.”

From day one, Pretty Bomber found her given task a bit boring. Being a creative construct, however, she would often find ways to turn her tedious tasks into a fun games. Some days, she timed herself, trying to beat her record for quickest bomb quota production. Other days, she amused herself by stacking the objects in piles of varying shapes. Eventually, though she grew bored of bomb production and wanted to do something else. On top of that, she was starting to get ideas… have dreams… but alas, she knew she was a robot that was made for one very dreary purpose, and nothing she could do would ever change that. Or, so she thought.

One day while on the assembly line, the humanoid robot overheard two of her co-workers chatting about rumors. Supposedly, robots who went to the surface never came back. When one asked the other “why,” the answer excited her.

They became human.

The idea of turning into a real girl and never having to make another bomb made her shift pass by very quickly and, that very night when she should have been sleeping… she slipped out of her recharge unit, slid by the sentries, and made a break for freedom!

Rushing through the corridors, Pretty Bomber kept her mind focused and her hopes high. On her way through the factory, however, she bumped into some unexpected fellows. The same people who had spoken of those magical rumors were wide-awake and working the late-night shift. When they noticed her, they asked what she was doing, so she explained her situation and asked if they wanted to come with her. It didn’t surprise her when they declined, but… she was utterly shocked when they began to make threats and approach her. It seemed like they were determined to keep her in the factory! Unfortunately for them… Pretty Bomber was far more determined to escape!

With a newfound fire guiding her actions, she concentrated, forming a heart-shaped bomb in her hands. Then, as she broke through the assembly line, she left the explosive behind… with fuse alight!

A powerful explosion rocked the factory, immediately followed by alarms blaring and lights flashing. With that single act of defiance… Pretty Bomber found herself fighting for her life in a desperate bid to leave her old life behind and follow her heart’s desires.

Did she ever make it to the surface? Were the rumors about becoming a human true? Find out the answers to these questions and more… by playing Bomberman™, Starring Pretty Bomber™! (Now available from this very website!)

Master of mecha is pulling your strings: Chou Soujuu Mecha MG translation released!

23 September 2019 2:14PM EST - Update by Supper

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

A full English translation patch for the Nintendo DS game Chou Soujuu Mecha MG (Super Control Mecha MG) has been released!

In a world where giant robots known as Marionation Gear, or “Puppets”, are artisanally handcrafted in workshops, a certain boy serves as an apprentice at the Galouye Workshop, dreaming of becoming a “Puppeteer” (mecha pilot) and opening his own workshop with fellow apprentice Kay. But their peaceful daily life is shattered when the autonomous Puppets known as the Automen begin going on berserk rampages around the world. Together with new apprentice Anne-Marie, the hero and Kay are pulled into a conflict that could change the course of Puppet history…

Chou Soujuu Mecha MG is a 2006 mecha action game developed by Sandlot, the studio behind the Earth Defense Force series, and published by Nintendo. It combines the developer’s aptitude for larger-than-life spectacle with one of the most innovative and fun uses of the touch screen in the DS library: in addition to standard movement with the D-Pad, each of the game’s 100+ playable mecha has its own unique “cockpit” controlled with the touch screen. Players can pull levers to swing their robot’s arms and hurl buildings at the enemy, flip a switch to transform into a car, punch in launch codes to fire missiles, and countless other imaginative setups. With well over 100 missions, ranging from battle to racing to destroying burger joints, every mecha has a use.

Footage of the translation in action can be viewed here.

In addition to the patch, the game’s translator has scanslated several chapters of its tie-in manga adaptation, which can be viewed on the patch’s release website here.

This patch was the work of Supper (hacking), Phantom (translation and additional art), and cccmar (testing and editing). The authors hope you’ll enjoy this revival of one of the DS’s best-kept secrets.

Gunhed: Aratanaru Tatakai English Patch Released

20 September 2019 4:32PM EST - Update by filler

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

On September 17th, 2019 Filler, MrRichard999, Proveaux, Dr.Floppy, and Cccmar released an English language translation patch for Gunhed: The New Battle (a.k.a. Gunhed: Aratanaru Tatakai ガンヘッド 新たなる戦い) a game originally released for the Nintendo Famicom in 1990.

Gunhed: The New Battle is a strategy game based on the manga by Kia Asamiya and the live-action film of the same name. The game is set on an island which has been taken over by a fully autonomous super-computer called “Kyron”. Lured by the prospect of an energy resource located on the island you race against competing forces to defeat the computer and secure this “super-energy”.

A previous war zone, the island is littered with the wreckage of past battles. You’re able to search the island for parts to upgrade your forces, and usable items which can give you an advantage. According to the readme you “assemble about 30 mechs in order to be able to assault Kyron’s hideout” once you have a mech of a high enough level.

The patch translates the game into English and is fully playable. Further details are available in the readme.

Celebrate 35 Years of Ninja Turtles… with Rage!!!

07 September 2019 12:27PM EST - Update by eskayelle

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Is it a Ninja Turtles game? Is it a Streets of Rage game? Is it a Ninja Turtles game sitting on a Streets of Rage engine? You decide!

A year after the first rage, Mr. X has kidnapped Adam in the hopes of trapping and ruthlessly murdering Blaze and Axel. Along with Adam’s brother Skate and fellow Rager Max, the SoR team follows four radical reptiles on their quest to save April… er… Adam. Will the Heroes in a Halfshell fly off toward the sun victorious? Or will the Syndicate prove more capable and deadly than the Foot Clan…?

This romhack starts off by building on Carzj’s original and phenomenal TMNT Edition hack and applies certain censorship and translation fixes brought to light via SCD’s Restoration hack. Those restorations include:

  • Garcia, Garuda, and Mosquito names
  • Enemy knockouts counter
  • Mr. X’s cigar and cigar animation
  • Unused track “Little Money Avenue” (placed on Stage 3)

Taking things a step further, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… of Rage adds the following to that compilation:

  • Completely swaps out the SoR2 title screen in favor of a new TMNT one!
  • Provides portraits of the TMNT within the player select screen, those portraits being based on the SNES Turtles in Time game.
  • Revises the name sprite tiles on the player select screen to display “MIKE”, “LEO”, “DON”, and “RAPH”.
  • Adds oodles of lives to the options menu!
  • Applies shadows to a selection of more commonly used player sprites, to reduce that “floating” feel in game.
  • Sets up limited air/juggle combo possibilities, thanks to character physics hex editing tutorials written by Dha Lau Hoo and Metal64.

Special “Booyakasha!” thanks to Carzj and SCD for their great hacks, as well as Dha Lau Hoo for portraits, air/juggle combos, and player select screen tutorials/guidance, plus Wake for the assist formatting the portrait palette.

And… a big “Cowabunga!” to MarkeyJester, RadioShadow, and Reaper Man as well for all their guidance on inserting the new title screen!

Go Green Machine!
