After many years, the updated version of this translation is finally complete.

Updates include: Fully working on real Snes with no slowdown, VWF code updated, improved font, new character name graphics and script revision.

Thanks go to ChrisRPG for updating his VWF code back in 2007 which helped make this release possible.

Spanish and French v2.0 versions were released earlier this year using the latest asm code. Thanks to Semco and FlashPV for translating this game into their own languages.

Note this v2.0 update works on a real Snes, bsnes, etc but is freezing on the latest v1.56 release of Snes9x during the ingame VWF. It works on Snes9x v1.43.

One of the 16-bit era’s hall-of-fame RPGs has received a Phantastic makeover!

Phantasy Star IV was one of SEGA’s best RPGs, with great story, character interaction, and gameplay, but the English translation was merely adequate. It suffered from awkward, often laughable dialog, as well as many mistranslations that were meant to tie the 2,000-year-long story of the previous three games together.

Among the goofiest translation choices:

  • Misnaming the planet “Palma” to “Parma”, which is a suburb of Cleveland.
  • The main character yelling “I’m not going to fight for no mission!” at a pivotal story moment.
  • An emotional goodbye between bros punctuated with “You silly!”

And so on.

The patch author, Chris Hatala – “GhaleonUnlimited”, was surprised that a Phantasy Star IV hack fixing the series references was never tackled, so he decided to learn what ROM hacking was all about.

Thanks to the help and support of two other fan-project leaders – vivify93 and lory1990 on RHDN – Chris was able to completely rewrite the script where needed and inject it into the game, along with adding bugfixes, fixing censorship, and allowing for player preference in which script they wanted to play.

Also, thanks to their help and also great resources online, the original Japanese was used to best match the original creators’ intentions.

Being a big fan of the breezy dialog and whimsical nature of the Lunars on SEGA CD, Chris aimed to add a naturalness to the dialog, as well as accentuate each character’s personality.

He also added humor that was appropriate to the established universe and tone of the game, because much of the game’s funnier moments were lost in translation or were simply missed opportunities in the original script.

Now that English fan translations of the brilliant SEGA AGES remakes of Phantasy Star 1 and 2 have been completed, this project was meant to link both both the classic translations together but also these new exciting developments in the Phantasy Star world.

At version 1_48, most of the text errors and bugs should be fixed. The author hopes that this relocalization will give 16-bit RPG fans who missed out on PSIV – as well as long-time PS fans – a reason to revisit one of classic gaming’s best RPG story arcs!

7th Dragon 2020-II Translation Released

Geoff Embree has completed an English translation of 7th Dragon 2020-II for PSP. With the official localization of 7th Dragon III: Code VFD last year, the entire 7th Dragon series is now playable in English.

7th Dragon 2020-II is a direct sequel to 7th Dragon 2020. It expands the classes previously introduced, adds the new Idol class, and further develops the cast of the previous game, nearly all of whom return. On the production side, Kazuya Niinou steps aside as director for Dai Oba, while producer Rieko Kodama (Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia), and composer Yuzo Kushiro (Streets of Rage, Etrian Odyssey) continue their work on the series.

It is recommended that players complete 7th Dragon 2020 before playing.

Fresh off of releasing his NBA Jam TE - Double Z Mod romhack of an SNES classic basketball / beat-em-up extravaganza, eskayelle has released his Hacking NBA Jam TE: A Beginner’s Guide document.

An aggregation of everything eskayelle researched and learned while modding the game, the document purports to provide guidance on everything from modding court and uniform colors, to injecting PAR codes into players, to modding stats and graphics, and more!

While eskayelle’s goal is to generate interest in NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, and more hacks of it, he admits to two alterior motives:

  • The hope that hackers may find the document useful enough that they consider annual roster updates to the game.
  • The hope that experienced hackers may find the document interesting enough that they may want to pitch in with some guidance on sound hacking.

TransCorp Releases 'Angelic' Tenshi No Uta English Translation!

Rejoice once more! News has come from Nightcrawler’s Translation Corporation! The Song of the Angel English translation has been released! This is a milestone in the fan translation community as it is the first introduction of the Tenshi No Uta series to English audiences. Fans of Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean will be happy to know the game shares many of the same developers known as the ‘Wolf Team’, as well as sharing the main musical composer too! As a result, Song of the Angel is a very charming game with a great soundtrack. The atmosphere will certainly feel familiar.

Nightcrawler made every effort to ensure the hacking work is amongst the best seen on the SNES platform. Nearly everything was expanded and proportional font deployed throughout all dialog and menus. The result ensures the dialog was uncompromised, and menus are up to standards set on future generation consoles. As an added bonus, a number of original game bugs were fixed too! Liana of Metal Max Returns fame did the translation work. So, you can expect to experience a well written translation to convey the aforementioned charm of the original game.

For those not familiar with the game, Song of the Angel is a love story at its core. It blends together a tale of love, angels, demons, and even Satan himself! Gameplay is typical 1994 RPG fare with the addition of a Parley negotiation system. You’ll meet a wide cast of characters including old friends, new friends, a tyrannical count, a soothsayer, and more. You will walk, teleport, sail, and fly by the time your adventure concludes.
