Chrono Trigger Envy Hack Twitch Playthrough

04 March 2015 7:42AM EST - Update by topcat

Other News - RHDN Project Page

The author will be doing a playthrough of this hack that he made a couple of years ago. There were mixed reviews with a lot of negative feedback based on difficulty early on. These mostly came from people that were offended by the dialogue so they did not bother to get the Rusty Blade from Melchoir. Oh well. Though it is admitted it does take too much grinding to get the money for it, The author was not able to further edit the project after the final release, and did not want to do it all over again. It’s not a perfect hack, but it is a full one and, in my opinion, one of the better and more in depth available.

The author noticed that, as of this article, there are 1,277 downloads. WOW! The author never thought that so many people would play this game! The author would love to know how many enjoyed it! Any feedback after these 2 years would be awesome.

Anyway, The author will be playing this on Twitch, so any and all aspects can be seen. I’d love for folks to join me. This will show that the increase in difficulty is in fact slight, it just doesn’t allow for speed runs or minimal playthrough. One must actually PLAY Chrono Trigger, as if it were the first time. No playing on auto pilot like so many of us cult fanatics have come to do after almost 2 decades of replay.

A link to the channel is provided in relevant link (under the article) and the project page (somewhere) for those with any interest.

Gun-Dec, Japanese Version of Vice: Project Doom, Translation Released!

28 February 2015 9:52PM EST - Update by Pennywise

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Today we have finished our translation of Gun-Dec, the Japanese version of Vice: Project Doom. This game has always been on our radar out of simple curiosity to see whether or not the translation was ever any good. As it turns out, it wasn’t. In addition to the usual censorship, there are parts of the translation that are completely made up and don’t follow the original text at all. Sure there are parts where the translation is relatively faithful, but taken as a whole, the official is not very good. Surprise, surprise.

This release is about a month’s worth of work starting about a month ago and was designed to get us back on the groove for future projects. From a technical perspective, all that needed to be done was expand the ROM and relocate part of the text into the expanded area to provide us with almost unlimited space (for the purposes of this translation) for our translation. Then we began text revision phase and now release!

By the way, we are almost ready to start testing The Legend of the Double Moon for the NES. It’s an excellent DQ clone and probably rivals that of DQ itself. If you’ve offered to help before or would like to help testing, please let us know!

P.S. If anyone can explain the title Gun-Dec, we’d love to know what it could possibly mean. The current thinking is that Dec is some sort of weird Japanese abbreviation for detective.

P.P.S. The title Vice: Project Doom wasn’t completely made up. When you boot up the game and get the title in an 8×16 font, VICE is stored with GUN-DEC in the same CHR section.

Final Fantasy IV Namingway Edition Released

25 February 2015 10:42PM EST - Update by Rodimus Primal

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Based on vivify93’s Project II comes Final Fantasy IV Namingway Edition. Now as a separate project, this hack aims to rename all the spells, items, monsters, etc as close to modern naming as possible. This was done with either abbreviations or other means. Also added to this, was a functional B Button Dash. Spell rates are reverted back to the original, and monsters (including the final boss) are restored to their original Final Fantasy IV difficulty.

Compress Tools upgraded to version 3.0

03 February 2015 5:48PM EST - Update by Bregalad

Utilities News - RHDN Project Page

For people looking to compress their data, Compress Tools is very versatile and support many compression algorithms, in addition to allow users to add their own.

The features are :

  • Use input scripts as data (more versatile than binary files)
  • Input data is defined as a set of randomly-accessible small data blocks (rather than a big file of binary data)
  • Output to either assembly language or binary files
  • Support non-ASCII encodings, support for unicode (UTF-8) input
  • Can analyse data using all algorithms to find the best suited compression algorithm easily
  • Open source, users can add their own compression / decompression algorithms to the existing ones

The program has been rewritten entirely in C++, bugs has been fixed, and it is now easier to use. Enjoy !
