Celebrate 35 Years of Ninja Turtles… with Rage!!!

07 September 2019 12:27PM EST - Update by eskayelle

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Is it a Ninja Turtles game? Is it a Streets of Rage game? Is it a Ninja Turtles game sitting on a Streets of Rage engine? You decide!

A year after the first rage, Mr. X has kidnapped Adam in the hopes of trapping and ruthlessly murdering Blaze and Axel. Along with Adam’s brother Skate and fellow Rager Max, the SoR team follows four radical reptiles on their quest to save April… er… Adam. Will the Heroes in a Halfshell fly off toward the sun victorious? Or will the Syndicate prove more capable and deadly than the Foot Clan…?

This romhack starts off by building on Carzj’s original and phenomenal TMNT Edition hack and applies certain censorship and translation fixes brought to light via SCD’s Restoration hack. Those restorations include:

  • Garcia, Garuda, and Mosquito names
  • Enemy knockouts counter
  • Mr. X’s cigar and cigar animation
  • Unused track “Little Money Avenue” (placed on Stage 3)

Taking things a step further, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… of Rage adds the following to that compilation:

  • Completely swaps out the SoR2 title screen in favor of a new TMNT one!
  • Provides portraits of the TMNT within the player select screen, those portraits being based on the SNES Turtles in Time game.
  • Revises the name sprite tiles on the player select screen to display “MIKE”, “LEO”, “DON”, and “RAPH”.
  • Adds oodles of lives to the options menu!
  • Applies shadows to a selection of more commonly used player sprites, to reduce that “floating” feel in game.
  • Sets up limited air/juggle combo possibilities, thanks to character physics hex editing tutorials written by Dha Lau Hoo and Metal64.

Special “Booyakasha!” thanks to Carzj and SCD for their great hacks, as well as Dha Lau Hoo for portraits, air/juggle combos, and player select screen tutorials/guidance, plus Wake for the assist formatting the portrait palette.

And… a big “Cowabunga!” to MarkeyJester, RadioShadow, and Reaper Man as well for all their guidance on inserting the new title screen!

Pop Star Debut (Idol Hakkenden) Unofficial Localization

05 September 2019 8:38AM EST - Update by Polinym

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Polinym of the Woolsey Fan Company (W.F.C.) has released a special translation of the Famicom game, Idol Hakkenden, which localizes the game as if it were released during the original NES era. The W.F.C. took care to ensure that all names, places, terms, and culture in Japanese was localized to things the general American audience with little to no Japanese knowledge could appreciate.

“Idol Hakkenden”, or Pop Star Debut as the W.F.C. has named it, is a Japanese text adventure about young Sabrina Seltzer who dreams of becoming a star. While on the surface it appears to be a “kiddie” game, several twists in the plot take the story in some shocking directions. Sabrina’s quest for stardom is threatened by an entertainment overlord with ambitions for world domination.

Pop Star Debut marks the W.F.C.’s first translation project. Polinym, currently the company’s only member, knew literally nothing of this game prior to translating it. He refused to look up any information about it unless absolutely necessary. This ensures that the game is more authentic as an American release, and not based on any other forms of translation.

The W.F.C. offers a truly unique experience for players. The game’s text was written not just to be a mere translation of the original, but enjoyable writing that would’ve appeared had the game been an American product.

American English Translation Patch - The Constellation Nerdulus

04 September 2019 10:06AM EST - Update by Tom

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

The Constellation Nerdulus is the American English translation of Otaku no Seiza, a turn-based Japanese RPG for the Famicom.

The patch is available to download now.

The plot involves a matriarchal society in which men are mocked as nerds and women reign supreme. The protagonist sets out to prove that he’s a real man and put the women of the world in their place by courting the Goddess herself… if the roaving fiends and the powerful Daughters of Aurora don’t stop him first.

The hacking was done by Pennywise of Stardust Crusaders Translations, the script was translated by Tom, and the title screen was created by Flash PV.

It's Resident Evil on PC, but it works!

03 September 2019 8:39AM EST - Update by Gemini

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

For years Resident Evil on PC has been a decent port plagued by outragingly bad code that prevented it from even getting outside of the Windows 95/98 compatibility mode as a requirement to simply boot. Last year Gemini got interested in DLL code injection, he tried to figure out why the game would run so badly and how code injection via DLL could help with these issues; this is how Classic REbirth was born.

Classic REbirth is a drag&drop patch in the form of a DLL that does all the hard fixing for the user. No need to use complex wrappers, to hard-patch executables, or to replace specific files. The usage is very simple: add the DLL where the executable is and it hooks onto the game as soon as it boots, just like that.

The early revisions of the DLL were a bit rough, as they still relied entirely on the game’s software renderer. This new revision, however, rewrites a large part of the code to bring a renewed experience that improves many aspects of the game, making it run in hardware mode in the way the game was designed, on recent Windows versions and newer hardware.

Resident Evil currently runs at a stable 30/60 fps, with support for higher resolutions, new controller libraries, and FFMPEG to do the grunt work with video and audio decompression. The result is a beautifully rendered game, just like the original on PlayStation, but with crisper visuals and virtually unlimited moddable features.

Tuned Heart [PC-98] - English Translation released!

31 August 2019 2:03PM EST - Update by celcion

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Hello again! This time around Nebulous Translations came up with Tuned Heart, a game with a title that’s suspiciously similar to Steam Heart’s (though there’s probably no relation there whatsoever). It’s a PC-98 SRPG with a rather unique premise for the time - an all-female squad battling crime. It’s a fun romp with tuning, leveling up and VN segments. It was an enjoyable project to work on, so hopefully the players will enjoy it too.
