Donkey Kong Country - Expert Edition Released

04 October 2018 7:18AM EST - Update by Q

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Nearly 25 years ago, Donkey Kong Country was released to the world, and it quickly won over gamers with its pre-rendered CGI graphics, became one of the best-selling Super NES games of all time, and spawned numerous sequels. And while its graphics might not have the wow factor they had in 1994, Donkey Kong Country’s gameplay holds up to this day.

While Donkey Kong Country is known for being difficult, many people have mastered it. Are you one of them? Donkey Kong Country - Expert Edition will put your platforming skills to the test. It removes the DK Barrels (which give you your characters back if you lose them) and Star Barrels (which act as checkpoints), so you can only take two hits in each stage before losing a life and being forced to start over from the beginning.

Additionally, all the Warp Barrels have been removed. If you think you’re just going to skip over Mine Cart Carnage, Stop & Go Station, or any other stage in the game, think again.

EarthBound Zero Without the Frustration

04 October 2018 7:17AM EST - Update by Q

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Since the NES EarthBound Zero prototype was leaked two decades ago, many gamers have been frustrated by the game’s tedious pacing. EarthBound Zero (known as Mother in Japan), the famed prequel to EarthBound for the Super NES, is an old school RPG known for it’s high random encounter rate and for requiring large amounts of grinding to level up and purchase equipment, which has discouraged many potential fans from completing the game.

This problem was fixed in the fan translation of the GBA version of Mother, which added an item called the “Easy Ring.” Now, you can enjoy the benefits of the Easy Ring while playing the original NES version of EarthBound Zero. Q’s Gameplay Balance hack—which is included in his EarthBound Zero Tweaks collection—quadruples earned experience, doubles earned money, and significantly reduces random encounter rates, just like the Easy Ring mod.

If you enjoyed EarthBound for the SNES and Mother 3 for the GBA but could never get into the first game, then apply this patch, and give it another chance.

Final Fantasy IV - Ultima

11 September 2018 1:06AM EST - Update by 8.bit.fan

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

A ‘deluxe’ version of Final Fantasy II for the SNES. A beloved classic that was nerfed quite a bit when it was released back in 1991 in the US. Using editors such as ff4kster, it was quickly revealed that LOTS of content was dummied out and there were empty space for extra content.

This hack creates a ‘deluxe’ version of the game by using most of the available space to add a bunch of extra content such as:

  • 22 NEW WEAPONS
  • 11 NEW SPELLS
  • 8 NEW BOSSES, etc.

The story and the feel of the original game are kept more or less the same. Project II was used as a base for this.

Hope everyone enjoys the hack! :)

Resident Evil 2 for PC comes back under a new light

04 September 2018 9:51AM EST - Update by Gemini

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Hyped for the remake of Resident Evil 2? Here’s a treat that you can’t pass on then: the latest Japanese PC port of RE2 (aka SourceNext) packed with HD resolution support, audio fixes, Win10 compatibility, and XInput support, not to mention the original translation hidden within code and data finally surfacing back into action.

If you needed an excuse to play the game once again but you were too afraid of bugs, poor compatibility, and Japanese everywhere, this patch is what you are gonna need. It’s also very easy to use: grab the official 1.1.0 patch, drop that and the DLL where the old game executable is, and you’re done – simple as that, really.

Final Fantasy III - Job System Improvement Released

29 August 2018 1:28AM EST - Update by Binarynova

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Binarynova has released the final version of his Job System Improvement hack for Final Fantasy III (NES/Famicom).

Final Fantasy III was Squaresoft’s first attempt at a dynamic job system, but it is pretty clunky to say the least. The player has to grind for and spend “Capacity Points” (CP) to change jobs and the Job menu sends the player through a lot of extra hoops to simply change a character’s job.

This hack is intended to smooth out the whole process. The player can now go right to the Job menu and select a new job. There will be no error message nor any confirmation prompt. The game will automatically remove that character’s equipment and change their job without any additional input. This is done with a check to make sure that the player’s inventory isn’t too full to remove the equipment, avoiding the chance that a character might change jobs with equipment they shouldn’t be able to wear.

Additionally, the cost of changing jobs has been removed. Changing jobs no longer requires you to grind for and spend CP. And as a result Binarynova has removed any mention of CP from battles or from the menu. An optional patch (meant for the AWJ Translation only) replaces the CP Costs on the Job menu with the jobs’ Skill Levels.

These changes make Final Fantasy III’s job system more open and accessible and should inspire players to try out more job combinations to find party setups that they really enjoy. Check out the project page for more detailed information.
