Final Fantasy V Sound Restoration

30 October 2011 10:15AM EST - Update by Bregalad

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

The Game Boy Advance of Final Fantasy V featued a terrible port of the music, with aggressive instruments. This hack was made to fix this problem by re-inserting back the original SNES soundtrack in the GBA game.

In this version 2.0, the Final Fantasy V Advance Sound Restoration hack has been completely remade from scratch in a new version, using the same technique used in the Final Fantasy VI advance patch, where the soundtrack was entirely re-sequenced.

The hack also changes a few sound effects, and features a fully orchestrated introduction !

As a plus, this hack also greatly reduces lagging problems that were introduced by reducing the CPU usage for mixing sound. Now all spells will play their animations at the original SNES rate.

New EarthBound Hack: The Rat Race

27 September 2011 9:54PM EST - Update by The Author

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

I am pleased to announce the public release of The Rat Race, a subtle hack of EarthBound which restores a great many censored elements from the original Mother 2 while altering and switching some of the major characters to make it a different story from the original.

The best way to describe this game, in my opinion, is as a kind of applied fan fiction; while literary EarthBound fan fiction abounds and several game hacks as well, I’ve not seen these concepts combined until now. Where EarthBound is a rather satirical look at modern life in the West (especially in the USA), The Rat Race is a similar story told from the point of view of those being satirized.

In any event, anyone who’s played EarthBound should find the settings and story of The Rat Race both familiar and strange much as the characters in the original Star Trek found their mirror universe to be in the “Mirror, Mirror” episode, albeit (I hope) not so much more evil. Enjoy!

(Now that I think of it, however, exploring an evil mirror universe of EarthBound might be a story worth pursuing. If anyone here has the interest and know-how to make that game, feel free.)

Final Fantasy Zz (Hard Type) Released

10 September 2011 12:23AM EST - Update by zzonkmiles

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

I am happy to announce the official release of Final Fantasy Zz, a hard-type hack of the original Final Fantasy for the NES! Final Fantasy Zz includes both bugfixes and enhancements that will make this hack more fun and more challenging to play than the original.

Some of the enhancements include the ability to see the contents of a treasure chest without having to drop something if your inventory is full, the ability to buy 9 items at a time, new and more powerful magic spells, slightly remapped dungeons, new enemy formations and AI, improved and rebalanced classes, new equipment, and the ability to dash by holding the B button. Some of the bugfixes include fixing the INT bug for magic, fixing broken magic spells like TMPR and SLEP, fixing some cosmetic bugs, and fixing the multiple level-up bug.

This hack is recommended for people who are very experienced with the original Final Fantasy. There aren’t any cheap enemy encounters, such as Iron Golems in the Earth Cave, but if you are not careful, any battle could be your last.

This is a great hack that has taken almost four years to develop. Give Final Fantasy Zz a try! Good luck! (You’ll need it!)

Final Fantasy VI: Stand Guard released

18 August 2011 8:36AM EST - Update by Spooniest

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

After two and a half months of caffiene-induced stupor and a bit of well-deserved remonstration by the RHDN Staff (who have been great, by the way), Final Fantasy VI: Stand Guard is ready to go.

This is a revision of Final Fantasy VI with fans of the 1994 SNES release in mind, polishing the story without making it unrecognizable. I also made three versions of the game, one Easy (where you get nifty equipment and everything’s where you think it is), one Normal (nearly identical to the original SNES release), and one Hard (where the encounter rate is maxed out, you start with terrible equipment and many of the rare items are removed).

The glory days of Square are now gone, and we may never get a decent version of the game from them, but luckily, we have the means to bring to the forefront the great work by their wonderful team of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshinori Kitase, Yoshitaka Amano and Nobuo Uematsu. “Shosan!”

Special thanks goes out to Lenophis for his patient advice, and to Ted Woolsey for his original 30-day marathon translation session back in the day, without whom this would not have been possible.

Stand Guard!
