The Real Ghostbusters Remastered 1.1 Released!

19 October 2019 9:16AM EST - Update by nesrocks

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

The long awaited NES Ghostbusters hack is here! Version 1.0 was released on October 4th, 2019. After hearing a lot of user feedback, fixes and improvements have been made in version 1.1. Be sure to check it out!

Most importantly, a cheat code has been added to allow the player to start with $10k in savings, to get accostumed with the new game design. The original game’s city map and ghost catching aspect was completely pointless and nearly impossible to get a gameover on. The only challenge was the staircase, with its terrible controls. Players would rely on a glitch to get 255 lives and beat the level, reaching the even more broken fight with Gozer.

This hack fixes and rebalances everything to make a real game out of it. So, though it may look like it is the same, it does not play like the original game at all. Thinking so could be frustrating, so keep these points in mind while playing:

  • Your main and only goal is to enter the Zuul building before PKE reaches 9999. For this you need to regularly stop and catch roaming ghosts, as they greatly increase the PKE meter if they reach the building!
  • After you have enough money for a beam and the anti-ghost suit you can enter the Zuul building, but buying the ghost food and the sound generator is advisable.
  • The hyper beam doubles the amount of money acquired from catching ghosts on buildings! But depending on your strategy you may want to keep the regular capture beam.
  • Same goes for the ghost alarm and the super trap. They may or may not be worth it depending on the play style!

TINA'S ADVENTURE ISLAND 2 RELEASED!!

16 October 2019 2:02PM EST - Update by Zynk

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

This is a player sprite hack of Adventure Island 2 for the NES. This hack changes Master Higgins’ player sprites into his girlfriend Tina. There are 3 patches for each region release: US, JP, and EU.

A lot of sprites were reconstructed to fit Tina’s custom sprites; notably, the skateboarding, jumping and swimming sprites, and the part where the player is riding IN the pterodactyl, instead of only a head sticking out of the flying dino’s back (like a pilot riding in a biplane), in this hack the player is riding ON its back.

Special Thanks to Spiderdave for helping fix a bug in the game. Apparently, that bug got carried over in Adventure Island 3 *gasps*.

Rosy Robot Raises a Ruckus!

26 September 2019 9:07AM EST - Update by Josephine Lithius

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

In an undisclosed location of an unknown world… a robot was created in the shape of a lovely, human girl was created by unseen masters for the sole purpose of creating piles-and-piles of explosives. This robot wore a pink dress, pink gloves, and a pink helmet with a golden heart on the forehead. These traits quickly earned her a nickname among her peers: “Pretty Bomber.”

From day one, Pretty Bomber found her given task a bit boring. Being a creative construct, however, she would often find ways to turn her tedious tasks into a fun games. Some days, she timed herself, trying to beat her record for quickest bomb quota production. Other days, she amused herself by stacking the objects in piles of varying shapes. Eventually, though she grew bored of bomb production and wanted to do something else. On top of that, she was starting to get ideas… have dreams… but alas, she knew she was a robot that was made for one very dreary purpose, and nothing she could do would ever change that. Or, so she thought.

One day while on the assembly line, the humanoid robot overheard two of her co-workers chatting about rumors. Supposedly, robots who went to the surface never came back. When one asked the other “why,” the answer excited her.

They became human.

The idea of turning into a real girl and never having to make another bomb made her shift pass by very quickly and, that very night when she should have been sleeping… she slipped out of her recharge unit, slid by the sentries, and made a break for freedom!

Rushing through the corridors, Pretty Bomber kept her mind focused and her hopes high. On her way through the factory, however, she bumped into some unexpected fellows. The same people who had spoken of those magical rumors were wide-awake and working the late-night shift. When they noticed her, they asked what she was doing, so she explained her situation and asked if they wanted to come with her. It didn’t surprise her when they declined, but… she was utterly shocked when they began to make threats and approach her. It seemed like they were determined to keep her in the factory! Unfortunately for them… Pretty Bomber was far more determined to escape!

With a newfound fire guiding her actions, she concentrated, forming a heart-shaped bomb in her hands. Then, as she broke through the assembly line, she left the explosive behind… with fuse alight!

A powerful explosion rocked the factory, immediately followed by alarms blaring and lights flashing. With that single act of defiance… Pretty Bomber found herself fighting for her life in a desperate bid to leave her old life behind and follow her heart’s desires.

Did she ever make it to the surface? Were the rumors about becoming a human true? Find out the answers to these questions and more… by playing Bomberman™, Starring Pretty Bomber™! (Now available from this very website!)

Celebrate 35 Years of Ninja Turtles… with Rage!!!

07 September 2019 12:27PM EST - Update by eskayelle

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

Is it a Ninja Turtles game? Is it a Streets of Rage game? Is it a Ninja Turtles game sitting on a Streets of Rage engine? You decide!

A year after the first rage, Mr. X has kidnapped Adam in the hopes of trapping and ruthlessly murdering Blaze and Axel. Along with Adam’s brother Skate and fellow Rager Max, the SoR team follows four radical reptiles on their quest to save April… er… Adam. Will the Heroes in a Halfshell fly off toward the sun victorious? Or will the Syndicate prove more capable and deadly than the Foot Clan…?

This romhack starts off by building on Carzj’s original and phenomenal TMNT Edition hack and applies certain censorship and translation fixes brought to light via SCD’s Restoration hack. Those restorations include:

  • Garcia, Garuda, and Mosquito names
  • Enemy knockouts counter
  • Mr. X’s cigar and cigar animation
  • Unused track “Little Money Avenue” (placed on Stage 3)

Taking things a step further, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… of Rage adds the following to that compilation:

  • Completely swaps out the SoR2 title screen in favor of a new TMNT one!
  • Provides portraits of the TMNT within the player select screen, those portraits being based on the SNES Turtles in Time game.
  • Revises the name sprite tiles on the player select screen to display “MIKE”, “LEO”, “DON”, and “RAPH”.
  • Adds oodles of lives to the options menu!
  • Applies shadows to a selection of more commonly used player sprites, to reduce that “floating” feel in game.
  • Sets up limited air/juggle combo possibilities, thanks to character physics hex editing tutorials written by Dha Lau Hoo and Metal64.

Special “Booyakasha!” thanks to Carzj and SCD for their great hacks, as well as Dha Lau Hoo for portraits, air/juggle combos, and player select screen tutorials/guidance, plus Wake for the assist formatting the portrait palette.

And… a big “Cowabunga!” to MarkeyJester, RadioShadow, and Reaper Man as well for all their guidance on inserting the new title screen!

It's Resident Evil on PC, but it works!

03 September 2019 8:39AM EST - Update by Gemini

ROM Hacks News - RHDN Project Page

For years Resident Evil on PC has been a decent port plagued by outragingly bad code that prevented it from even getting outside of the Windows 95/98 compatibility mode as a requirement to simply boot. Last year Gemini got interested in DLL code injection, he tried to figure out why the game would run so badly and how code injection via DLL could help with these issues; this is how Classic REbirth was born.

Classic REbirth is a drag&drop patch in the form of a DLL that does all the hard fixing for the user. No need to use complex wrappers, to hard-patch executables, or to replace specific files. The usage is very simple: add the DLL where the executable is and it hooks onto the game as soon as it boots, just like that.

The early revisions of the DLL were a bit rough, as they still relied entirely on the game’s software renderer. This new revision, however, rewrites a large part of the code to bring a renewed experience that improves many aspects of the game, making it run in hardware mode in the way the game was designed, on recent Windows versions and newer hardware.

Resident Evil currently runs at a stable 30/60 fps, with support for higher resolutions, new controller libraries, and FFMPEG to do the grunt work with video and audio decompression. The result is a beautifully rendered game, just like the original on PlayStation, but with crisper visuals and virtually unlimited moddable features.
