FF4kster v0.1

28 December 2012 10:13AM EST - Update by pinkpuff

Utilities News - RHDN Project Page

FF4kster is an attempt to make an all-in-one comprehensive editor for Final Fantasy 4 (Final Fantasy 2 US).

For a long time it seemed like there were all sorts of information known about data in the FF2US ROM which no existing editor could manipulate, and even with the existing editors you would often need to use several different ones depending on what you wanted to achieve.

Thus, the goal of this project is to create a single editor that allows the user to manipulate any of the known data from FF4. In its current state there are still a lot of known data that it is not yet capable of editing, but it does currently have the ability to edit several kinds of data that no other currently existing utility can.

This is being actively worked on, and periodic updates featuring bug fixes and the ability to edit new kinds of data can be expected.

Dreams Do Come True, Arabian Nights Translation Finished

26 December 2012 3:59PM EST - Update by Pennywise

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

After what seems like an eternity, the translation for Arabian Nights is finished. This project has nothing to do with the previous translation effort of Yonin no Translators and is done from scratch. After languishing for years, the project received a major boost when LostTemplar signed on to do the reprogramming. In a matter of months he has produced some very high-quality stuff. The script was also translated by Eien ni Hen and is a joy to read. A lot of work went into this game and we hope everyone enjoys it this holiday season.

Choro Q 2 English Translation Released!

24 December 2012 12:34PM EST - Update by mz

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

This patch translates the amazingly fun PSX game Choro Q 2, the second game made by Tamsoft, the creators of this now very long series by TAKARA. Choro Q 2 has 76 customizable cars, more than 30 completely different tracks, a big town to explore, great two-player modes, lots of extras, and, most importantly, excellent gameplay.

If you’re new to the series, start with Choro Q 3! While Q 2 is also great, it’s not even half as good as Q 3.

Lucky Number 7

Site News

RHDN is now 7 years old! The milestones continue to pile up:

  • Over 50 million unique visits
  • Near 11,000 community submissions
  • 500+ documents
  • 800+ utilities
  • 900+ Hacks
  • 1000 complete translations

We’re home to the largest and most talented global group of ROM hackers ever assembled! We have had representation on our forums from over 30 different countries! It’s hard for one place to contain all that intellect and not explode! I’m glad we haven’t, because the collective international talent here is by far our greatest strength. It’s unmatched anywhere else.

We’ve re-shaped ourselves over the past two years or so and grown into a more mature and stable community compared to some of our earlier days. I’m very happy with the site today and am proud to have created and grown the site into what it has become. I could not have done it without the help and contributions from all of our staff and community members. RHDN is a ship. Like any ship, it needs a well oiled crew to navigate the wild seas. Thanks goes out to all our RHDN sailors whom have helped me steer this ship straight and true to where we are today. Give yourselves a hand. Well done! *applauds*

Site development efforts this year were focused heavily on improving the user interface and quality of submissions. A new form engine, more uniform layouts, rewritten guidelines, improved validation, and inline errors have gone a long way in simplifying the submission (and approval) process. As a result, we have seen a marked improvement in the quality of output from from both staff and members. We also deployed a new caching engine that has continued to keep the site speedy and light on resources. We are always looking for ways to ‘do more with less’ to keep costs down. We will continue to improve as time allows in year 8. Some possibilities include AJAX search results, enhanced entry pages, in-line error improvements, and site layout changes. Time is our only limit.

Does it get any better than this? You bet it does! We continue to grow daily and become even more valuable as the greatest ROM hacking resource on the planet. Cheers to another great year!

The Beginning of the Legend of the Peach Boy

13 December 2012 11:44AM EST - Update by KingMike

Translations News - RHDN Project Page

Today I have released a translation for The Legend of Peach Boy for the NES. It is a comical RPG, and the debut of one of Hudson’s mascots (be careful to not confuse this game with the spin-off board game Momotarou’s Railroad).

I’d be interested in doing the sequels to this, but right now the most likely looks to be the spin-off Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden. This one tells us the individual tales of three supporting characters from the first game. First released on Game Boy, then ported to the PCE and last, Famicom. I’d probably again do the FC version, which I believe was also the last developed released RPG for the console. I’ve already begun work on dumping the script.

As for the others:

  • Shin Momotarou Densetsu (SFC exclusive): script dumped. Big hurdle is menu work.
  • Momotarou Densetsu II (PCE and PS1): PS1 probably the best, but I’d really have a learning experience on my hands.
  • Momotarou Densetsu Turbo (PCE) is a remake of this game I’m releasing. I’d need to learn how to make a Huffman compresser, and it diverges enough from the FC version, so it’d probably need a re-translation as well.
