Translations: The Beginning of the Legend of the Peach Boy
« on: December 13, 2012, 11:44:37 am »

Update By: KingMike

Today I have released a translation for The Legend of Peach Boy for the NES. It is a comical RPG, and the debut of one of Hudson's mascots (be careful to not confuse this game with the spin-off board game Momotarou's Railroad).

I'd be interested in doing the sequels to this, but right now the most likely looks to be the spin-off Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden. This one tells us the individual tales of three supporting characters from the first game. First released on Game Boy, then ported to the PCE and last, Famicom. I'd probably again do the FC version, which I believe was also the last developed released RPG for the console. I've already begun work on dumping the script.

As for the others:
* Shin Momotarou Densetsu (SFC exclusive): script dumped. Big hurdle is menu work.
* Momotarou Densetsu II (PCE and PS1): PS1 probably the best, but I'd really have a learning experience on my hands.
* Momotarou Densetsu Turbo (PCE) is a remake of this game I'm releasing. I'd need to learn how to make a Huffman compresser, and it diverges enough from the FC version, so it'd probably need a re-translation as well.

This game really looks interesting! If I feel like playing a Famicom RPG again I will definitively give it a try. Kudos for the hard work!

Good that there's another translation to a quirky japanese game.

Is emuxhaven down or what? Because I can't access it.

It's nice to see this translation finished. I bet you feel relieved having finally finished it after a few years of work.

I've played through Love Quest and it looks like it would be a fun project. (It's wacky as hell.) Not sure how hard it would be to hack, though, or if anyone's even interested in hacking it.
Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans... and pants to match. The monkey clown horrible karate round and yummy like cute small baby chick would beat the donkey.

Might have found a bug.

Went to the wizard after the first town and beat him for the potion spell.  Used the spell right after (had 0mp) and the game locked up.  Will try to replicate this another time.

There's some adult stuff in it from what I remember, but IIRC it's more bawdy than anything else. I can't think of any M-rated titles for the SNES, come to think of it.

I'm stuck in this game :( Does anybody know what you have to do to wake Netaro, the guy who is sleeping in the middle of a bridge in a village? I think I might need
Spoiler:
an icicle, but I can't have it (it melts in my hands just after exiting the witch's tower). I think I need some kind of bag (drawstring bag?) in order to get it after defeating the aforementioned witch in the ice area.

I've been walking by the whole map for hours (at least the accesible part) and I find nothing. I already have the dog and the pheasant, the flame bow and the 4 magics acquired from the sages. I also have two treasures. What have I missed?

Thanks in advance.

That one got me stuck for awhile. That is one of the two points I actually had to consult a Japanese TAS to figure it out.

Try asking the fortune-teller in Netaro's town for a clue.
Spoiler:
Buy a Sushi Roll and USE it on the hermit who gives you the Potent spell (near Travel Town).
The hit detection was a bit finicky, I had to try it while standing to the side of the wizard.
You'll get the item you need to keep the icicle.

I think I got an idea about the game crash after the Potent. Had to shift a bit of menu expansion code I wrote by a byte to fix a game-breaking bug in the final boss fight. I thought I got the affected address changes.
The fix on that is to change ROM address $3A82A to D6.
If I missed any more, let me know.
I suppose I should wait a bit if anyone else finds some menu errors before releasing a fix patch.

Thanks, KingMike, I was completely clueless about this one :) I red something about
Spoiler:
"the wizard likes sushi rolls" but I didn't realize they were talking about the same wizards that grant you powers.

By the way, my game has also hung up in some situations using spells. It happpened to me yesterday when I used the "lightning" spell without having enough magic points.

Oh, is there any overworld map somewhere? It's easy to get lost in this game. I've only found this: http://www.segasaturno.com/portal/files/posted_images/1901/momo.jpg

That is the PCE version.
World map stitched together from the Famicom version, 1 MB. (someone could probably get a cleaner rip if they wanted. Doesn't include the wide ocean that you can't see, I also didn't sync the animated water tiles. I've got somewhat hazy notes on the map data.)

That one address fix should take care of the magic menu for all spells. (it seems the game checks for low MP before displaying the Flight submenu, so that should be fine.)

Oh, I never mentioned the two secret passwords I translated.

Spoiler:
Sound Room: IWANNAHEARMUSIC
A sound test. Use A/B on controller 1 to play music and (I think) A/B on controller 2 to play sound effects.

Art Room: IWANNASEEENEMIES
View all enemy graphics, and maybe cutscene graphics as well.

Hello again. Thanks for the map, KingMike, it really has come in handy

I'm stuck again, though. It's in the jizo row, I simply can't fathom how to rearrange the words they say to form a coherent sentence. I don't even know from which word start. English is not my native language, so this part of the game is being quite tough for me. Boy, this game sure is hard  :banghead:

Can anybody give me a hint, please? Thanks.
