There's a roughly 90% chance that the text compression he's dealing with has nothing to do with the SA-1. I've worked on a several special chip games and I know people who have worked on others, and the chip is almost never used for decompressing text or font graphics.
Ah, that's my bad -- I thought he connected the SA-1 to the compression somehow, but on rereading he clearly didn't.
