ROM Hacks: Zelda Parallel Worlds 10-Year Anniversary Update
« on: January 01, 2017, 11:57:06 pm »

Update By: qwertymodo

Love it or hate it, you've probably heard of it.  Parallel Worlds is by far the most popular full-game hack of A Link to the Past released to date.  Today, in honor of the 10-year anniversary of its original release, the hack has been updated to add several new gameplay mechanics, and to attempt to address many of its long-standing issues.

Some of the new features include:

*Full CD-quality soundtrack via MSU-1 audio support
*Stun enemies by hitting them with your bare fist (no sword)
*Upgraded AST-Style Pegasus Boots
*Break pots and collect items with the sword
*Shovel is now usable, with random treasures
*Loading your game starts with full health instead of half
*Able to save the game at any time, no need to get the sword first
*Backtracking from the top of the Parallel Tower is possible (eliminates an extra climb for the Kokiri Emerald)
*Bomb knockback no longer damages Link

Additionally, many existing bugs were fixed:
*Title screen graphical glitch on real hardware fixed
*You can collect both boomerangs
*You can collect the second Mushroom even with Magic Powder in your inventory
*Mothula has been fixed
*Game crashing door in Blind's room has been closed
*Infinite scroll glitch outside Icy World Church has been blocked
*Impa's Ways crystal glitch is fixed
*Various buggy interior doors fixed
*Various overworld exit coordinates fixed
*Palette glitch with the bunny sprite in the Parallel Tower fixed
*Hylian shield overworld palette improved (when stolen by Pikit)
*Various typos fixed

This update does not modify the dungeon designs, except very minor edits such as the previously mentioned backtracking in the Parallel Tower.  In the near future, PuzzleDude's Parallel Remodel will also be updated with these new features, if that's more to your liking.  However, the new gameplay mechanics make quite a significant difference to the difficulty curve, so if you have tried the game before and found it to be too hard, you might find the new update to be more reasonable in that regard.

Great hack from what I've played, but one issue...

I find it rather annoying how close-in the HUD elements are. I know they need to be inside the safe-zone, technically, but they've very distracting as they are currently positioned. Anyone have an idea where in the ROM data I might change their positions?

Looks like the BG3 tilemap for the HUD is at file offset 0x06FE77-0x06FF8E

Those won't help here, the PW HUD is custom code in a new ROM location.  However, they are still very valuable documents.

But does it still do everything in its power to turn people into frothing madmen?

Is it compatible with this patch? http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2879/

If not, I'd love if someone were to add compatibility with it. Pressing start to change items every time is kind of annoying, L/R makes the process much faster.

Nope, sorry.  L/R are already used for the Lens of Truth in PW.

Anyway to get all these changes into the vanilla game?

*Full CD-quality soundtrack via MSU-1 audio support
*Stun enemies by hitting them with your bare fist (no sword)
*Upgraded AST-Style Pegasus Boots
*Break pots and collect items with the sword
*Shovel is now usable, with random treasures
*Loading your game starts with full health instead of half
*Able to save the game at any time, no need to get the sword first
*Bomb knockback no longer damages Link
also L&R item change

I know hacks exist for MSU-1, L/R item change, and AST Pegasus Boots, and there might be several more I'd like to have in the vanilla game just hope they can all be combined somehow

looks like i've been missing a lot of news articles here.

"*Full CD-quality soundtrack via MSU-1 audio support"

in the case of MSU-1 hacks, "Full CD-quality soundtrack" translates to: a collection of remix tracks. at least so far as any such hack i've seen on this site. theres the hack you download (which iirc only works on specific emulators) and then theres the huge 200MB+ remix collection to download. :/

aside from that minor gripe, that looks like a good number of changes/improvements.

might give this update a try some time.

I think in the case of Zelda III there is a CD of orchestral arrangements that can be pulled from. They likely took full advantage of that. But yeah, I'm sure most MSU-1 soundtracks are just a collection of whatever could be salvaged from the internet since apparently there are no musicians in the hacking community.

I used the soundtrack from A Link Between Worlds, so the instrumentation actually sounds like a high quality game OST and not like "a bunch of remixes" because that's exactly what it is.

That's basically what A Link to the Past DX is, more or less.  Shovel outside of the mini-game isn't going to work in vanilla, there isn't room for it in the inventory.  Full hearts on load and bomb knockback aren't going to be added, but L/R item change will be whenever I get around to updating it again.  http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2234/

What are AST-Style Pegasus Boots?

It means the Pegasus Boots work like they do in BS Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets. You can change directions with them instead of stopping when you press a different direction.

There have been a handful of bugs reported, including one game-breaker (a door in Darunia's Caverns doesn't open when it should), so I've issued a hotpatch, to apply on top of the Parallel Worlds 1.2 ROM (i.e. this is *just* the fix, not the full patch).  My apologies :/

I'm enjoying this hack immensely so far.

I did notice a text error right at the beginning of the game I wanted to report. In the guardhouse, all instances of the word CELLER should be CELLAR.

Quick response qwerty! I literally made an account to report the game-ending Darunia door bug. Thanks immensely for that fix.

There's a small black square on the title screen when I load this in sd2snes.  Not sure if it's just me or a known issue...
