Translations: Tales of Phantasia PSX Beta Testing Begins

Update By: throughhim413

As of today, beta testing on Tales of Phantasia PSX has officially begun. It's been a while since our last update, so let me bring you up to speed on the newest stuff.
  • Script Translation and Editing - 100%
  • Skit Translation and Editing - 100%
  • New Features: Selectable ability names (English vs. Romanized Japanese).
  • Splash screen and anti-eBay/P2P screen.
  • Complete Patcher made by Gemini specifically for this project. Patches the game in 2-5 minutes depending on your system.

So, there you have it.  Most of this stuff has been done for several weeks.  But there were internal alphas and some fixes to do, so nothing much that we could update people on. The two pictures here demonstrate the Ability Name Selector in action. This project is in its final stretch, we thank you for your ongoing support!

WE HAVE ALREADY SELECTED AND CONTACTED OUR BETA TESTERS, PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST TO BE A BETA TESTER!

Great news. I've been holding off on playing the SNES version in anticipation of this translation, so hopefully it won't be too much longer until the public release.

Screens look awesome!  Only thing that jumped out at me slightly was "Ogi"  as for "Ougi".  Not saying that is wrong, but that's definitely the first I've ever seen it spelled without the "u" and with a funky line over the "O" amid anime, other games, and so on.

At any rate, looks awesome and it'll be one amazing accomplishment once all is said and finally done on it.

Using "ō" or "ou" is the same. In my patches I prefer to use those characters (called macros, if I remember correctly). You can't possibly pronounce the extra "u" that way and it's more correct than having a simple "o". ;)

Pretty simple: because we work on one game at time. :P Also the game is pretty simple to hack, a lot more than beasts like Dracula X or Innocent Sin.

PS: For all those interested in the custom patcher, Chester tested it for me on Linux with Wine and it worked totally fine. However, I think I might release the sources so that somebody can write ports of it (I'm a Win man, so I'm not really interested :P).

I never played Okami. Was there on the cover a picture of Shinji Mikami naked? :o

Hells yes! :D I thought that I would have to wait a few months for the translation to be completed, and yet you do all of this now you sneaky dog :o. Equipped with yummy English/Japanese Romanized techniques option!

Way to go, guys!

Interestingly enough, macrons (those symbols over the vowels) are generally considered the *most* proper way to romanize Japanese in a formal setting. They're by no means the only way, but you tend to see them far more often once you get rolling on novels, manuals, etc. Besides, using macrons saves on string length :P I love the things. They're clean, simple, and take up less space. I wouldn't mind seeing them in more game translations, actually.

New Features: Selectable ability names (English vs. Romanized Japanese).
And thus you plan to alleviate the drama surrounding your translation preferences?!
What cunning fiendishness!

They are standard in my projects. ;) I'm probably the only one who ever used them for amatorial translations.

I love them, too. :D

I have to say I like macrons better than tacking a "u" at the end of a vowel, which looks like something that sounds totally different from what it is.

When Gemini first told me that we'd be using macrons, I was very hesitant to do so (since I've always always seen it written as "Ougi").  But if I'm any indication, in time, many people will come to like them better.  Not only do they save space, they also look a lot neater and express the desired "sound" of the word much better than tacking on extra vowels.  I'm a die-hard macron fan after this project.
