Translations: Maison Ikkoku PCE Patch Released
« on: April 19, 2008, 05:52:25 pm »

Update By: filler

Some folks may already know David Shadoff and I have been working on a translation patch for Maison Ikkoku. We are happy to announce it's been released as of April 8th 2008.

Maison Ikkoku is a graphical, menu-based interactive digital comic,
based on the events of the manga and anime series.  You play as Godai, who must win the heart of Kyoko by running around town, doing certain things, making some people happy, and somehow dealing with your meddling neighbours.  And all this on a limited budget, and without really knowing what ‘certain things’ need to be achieved.

A line of the ending text is untranslated which will probably be fixed with a follow up patch, but otherwise it appears to be bug free and has been played start to finish successfully.

The patch is available here on RHDN. It is intended to be applied to the game image including header,
with a size of 262,656 bytes. Translation notes, cheats & hints, and a translated manual are also available from the “relevant link”. Enjoy!

Being the hopeless weeaboo that i am, i can't thank you enough for another adventure-style animuh game goodness translated into a language i understand.  :woot!: It's really great to see more of those interactive novels being translated in the last years.

Disclosure:  I'm the one who played through the game.

While the last part of the ending is the only translation error of note, I wouldn't call it bug free.  There are a few places in the command menu where names are garbled, like Kozue's and Ikuko's.  There are also some minor typos here and there, nothing I could give you a specific example of.  None of this affects gameplay to any real degree.

I had to look up "weeaboo" in the dictionary. I found a picture of myself.  ::)

Good to know. FYI: If anyone is interested in helping us fix errors like this, please send a mednafen savestate from before the issue occurs to Dave (contact info available in the readme). Grats again on finishing the game.

I'm sure it will be. Unfortunately it's in a state of affairs that I like the least, the "possibly irreparable bug" situation. It's one of those things where all we can do is wait and have faith.

I think the translated manual in your site lacks some content, that or my computer is mocking me by not displaying any text on the PDF.

Works fine for me.

It’s mocking you. Time to start deleting files that it holds near and dear to its cold, evil heart.

Adobe is mocking me! The file opens fine in the browser, but the text disappears once I open the PDF in Reader. Weird...

Also, how can I add headers to PC Engine ROMs? No-Intro dumps refuse to run with the patches applied because they lack those.

What I would try:
use a hex editor with copy/paste functions.
Type out 512 bytes ($200 in hex) then paste the PCE ROM right after.
Save.
Assuming the header data itself isn't important, I suppose you could use SNESTool.
Then delete the header after patching to get a patched headerless ROM.

Tried Foxit Reader?

Oh, how could I forget about SNESTool? Thanks, now works fine.

Tried Foxit Reader?

Yep. Opening it causes the Foxit Reader process to take about 430 MB of memory, the PDF is displayed as it should but scrolling down is painful and fills one of the cores of my CPU. Oh well, at least Universal Viewer uses the Acrobat plugin, so it's okay.
