Dragon Quest: Delocalized Edition

Hack of Dragon Warrior

Description:

For this Delocalized Edition of the original Dragon Warrior, a lot of changes have been made in an effort not only to remove the rigid censorship imposed by Nintendo of America, but also to move the game much closer to the look and feel of the original Japanese Famicom Dragon Quest.

The script has been entirely rewritten in a contemporary English style based initially on a translation document done by x_loto. This has been significantly reviewed and refined through collaboration with translation partner, nejimakipiyo as well as Masafumi Sato, a native Japanese speaker. We believe that the resulting script is more accurate than any other English translation while also coming across as refined and literate.

While a keen observer may notice a few variances of Delocalized Edition from the look of the original Famicom game, this project comes very close to it–with the key difference being a custom designed Japanese style hero sprite that can walk in four directions. The original front facing only style of the NPC sprites has been preserved otherwise. While this hack may be controversial in the sense that the graphics have been reduced to a more primitive state, it should be noted that this hack will provide the player with a much better sense of the progression of the series during the NES era. The player may even discover that this style has its own unique charm.

  • Note – As of version 1.03 the script has been rewritten entirely. A much better job was done the second time around due to using an insertion via the abcde utility. Restraints on the size of individual strings of text were removed. Also, several more residual elements of the original NA version have been swept away.
