Hack of Secret of Mana

Description:

This hack revises the monster spawn table to make it so every monster in the game can still be encountered at the end of the game. In the original game, several monsters could no longer be encountered once certain dungeons were cleared. This hack prevents that.

Previously disappearing monsters and where you can re-encounter them:

  • Werewolf: Haunted Forest.
  • Polter Chair: Haunted Forest. (Designed in part to be an amusing companion hack to “Watts in the Haunted Forest” - Watts’ chair is haunted!)
  • Evil Sword: Haunted Forest. (Designed in part to be an amusing companion hack to “Watts in the Haunted Forest” - Watts’ sword is haunted!)
  • Goblin: Gaia’s Navel.
  • Chess Knight: Matango Caves.
  • Mystic Book: Ice Country.
  • Specter: Ice Country.
  • Sand Stinger: Kakkara Desert.
  • Emberman: Kakkara Desert.
  • Robin Foot: Kakkara Desert. (Designed in part to compliment “Early Luna” - this makes retrieving Luna early a bit tougher!)
  • Dark Funk: Kakkara Desert. (Designed in part to compliment “Early Luna” - this makes retrieving Luna early a bit tougher!)
  • Red Drop: Moon Palace.
  • Dark Ninja: Mana Fortress.
  • Tomato Man: Mana Fortress.
  • Wizard Eye: Mana Fortress.
  • Ghost: Mana Fortress.
  • Luka now keeps an Ice Thug in her basement as a (very dangerous!) pet. Visit him at your own risk. (He will be a Water Thug until you attain Pure Land access.) This is done in part to eliminate the badly-programmed Luka-in-jail event, which appears to have never been finished in the original game as the dialog makes little sense and when you “free” her from jail, she remains trapped behind the jail cell in all your subsequent visits for a time before she finally moves upstairs some time later. It also provides a better rationale for why Luka very curiously has a jail cell in the basement of her palace to begin with…

This hack also bundles the “Revisit Sunken Continent” and “Revisit Pure Land” hacks by Queue to make it possible to go back to those locations, thereby preventing the following enemies from disappearing:

  • Fierce Head: Underground City.
  • Steelpion: Underground City.
  • Ghoul: Underground City.
  • Gremlin: Grand Palace.
  • Griffin Hand: Pure Land.
  • Mushgloom: Pure Land.
  • Ice Thug: Pure Land.
  • Ghost: Pure Land.

Also some monsters that were stuck in walls and thus unencounterable have been fixed in this hack. None are unique, but this will increase the density of monsters in a few dungeons.

The monsters stuck in walls were:

  • A Water Thug in Matango Caves.
  • A Howler in Ice Country.
  • A Mystic Book in Northtown Ruins.
  • A Bomb Bee on Lofty Mountains.
  • A Fierce Head in Palace of Darkness.
  • Two Captain Ducks in Underground City.
  • A Fierce Head in Underground City.

And some monsters were simply moved around to make them better positioned:

  • Some Chobin Hoods were moved from those weird pits/islands outside of Elinee’s Castle to the ramparts of the castle instead.
  • A Red Drop in Fire Palace has been moved from a useless dead end to a place where you are more likely to have to fight him.
  • A Dark Ninja in a dead end of Palace of Darkness was changed to an Imp so that he might pose a threat to you via his long distance attacks whereas the Dark Ninja would not.

Last but not least, the Shadow X enemies can now be refought if you visit them again in Joch’s Cave.

Some important things to note:

  • How to combine this with the Variable Width Font hack: 1. Apply VWF, 2. Remove header, 3. Apply this hack, 4. Apply this hack’s VWF support hack.
  • How to combine this with Relocalized: 1. Apply Relocalized, 2. Apply this hack, 3. Apply this hack’s Relocalized support hack.
