Super Metroid: Revolution EX

Hack of Super Metroid

Here is a complete Super Metroid level hack which will prove to be very challenging to seasoned players.

The skills that are going to be required are:

  • wall kicking. if you can’t, then try this hack later.(or not at all.)
  • midair morphing
  • gravity suit-less grapple-wall-kicking
  • common sense

If you’re good enough to beat redesign, this should be easy.

Save Yourself

Revolution EX is too hard to really be considered fun. On top of being really difficult, there are beam specific enemies which require the player the constantly pause and switch beams for, and there is one glaring issue that I will touch on later.

Revolution EX is not badly built. And it does offer up a nice surprise at one point. There is a heat run that is decently portioned, and right in the middle of it is a very big surprise for the player. The palettes and graphics also look good for the most part. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that detract from this hack.

First off, it is difficult. Not only are enemies buffed in damage dealing, but their health has been boosted as well. This means that you will have to pause, switch beams around, unpause, and then camp while slowly defeating them. This really breaks up any flow to the game, as enemies will maul you if you try to run through them.

The one huge, major glaring issue with this hack has to deal with something required to advance. At one point, you are locked into a small area, with nothing but a save station. Now, in any other hack, this is a perma-stuck. However, in one very evil twist that no one should ever repeat, you actually have to save at that save station, reset your game, and then load the save file. Due to the nature of the save system/loading of Super Metroid, he was able to make the save station load you into a different spot, which lets you advance. Seriously, such a thing would be bad even for hiding an item only for 100%. It should never be done, and for those who even get to this point, this is probably a quitting point.

  • Good custom palettes
  • Big surprise in the middle of the heat run
  • Central hub area that allows the player to quickly get around once they open the doorcaps

  • Way too hard for any but the most advanced players
  • Requires a ton of pausing and unpausing to defeat beam specific enemies
  • Requiring an actual game reset to advance

I cannot recommend this hack. If you are very good at Super Metroid, and very patient, this one may not be so bad. Until you get to the save station. And it is a little bit sad, because a lot of people will miss a really neat use of a boss. For your own sanity, you will want to skip this one.
