This is a review of version 1.0.

At first glance, Hellfire appears to be a great graphical hack. The sprites that have been changed appear comical while the hero (formally Batman) has been changed into a weird looking Ninja Turtle. Even the story sequence that plays when the title screen is left on without starting the game has the Joker and Vicki Vale portraits changed into characters in Hogan’s Alley. Despite some of the text in the story left unchanged, this hack was very intriguing.

Unfortunately, only the early stage bosses and portraits were changed. Starting around stage 3 is where it appears that Inventor stopped working on the hack as the third boss is the first that has been left unchanged. With the third and fifth bosses and the Joker being left unchanged, as well as the ending, this hack ended up being a disappointment. It is difficult to determine whether this is a hack that can or cannot be recommended because where the hack is finished is great and creates a rather humorous atmosphere, but once the part of the game that is left unchanged is reached, all uniqueness is lost and feels unfinished.
