Good concept, flawed execution

Note: I’m going to list most of the changes this hack has so if you want to be surprised don’t read this.

“Zabil”’s traction and acceleration is the first thing you notice playing this. It takes longer to pick up speed and slowing down takes a lot longer (unless you jump backwards). It’s pretty similar to how you move on ice in SMB3. The musics edited a lot, most of the edits are okay but the castle music sounds really out of place. The tiles & palettes are edited to be ice/winter themed. The sprites aren’t edited much but flying fish turn into koopa troopas after being stomped. The author attempted a chainlink background but didn’t edit the background objects to match. It looks pretty sloppy as is but with some pretty minor tile and palette edits it could look good.

Goombas, koopas, & beatles are modified so stomps only put them down for a second. Mushrooms and Stars are modded to move slow which I’m pretty sure causes some enemies to do the running man. Lakitus pretty glitched a lot of times he throws spineys inside of bricks or they just don’t show up. Also lakutu doesn’t retreat near the flagpole which causes the game to hang up unless you kill him before you hit the flagpole. Fireballs are changed to baseballs which can only kill bowser. Bullet bills move at warp speed which can make some parts rough. All 32 levels are edited though a few are reused or minor edits. The level design usually works well with the changed physics but their are some rough jumps. The only things I didn’t like level design-wise was the over-use of moving platforms around blocks & the low placement of lakitu in spots cause both cause glitches.

Overall despite all the flaws I pointed out this is an enjoyable hack and one of my favorite SMB1 hacks. The controls seem odd at first but they’re pretty easy to get down and make the game more interesting to play than the average Mario hack. Unfortunately because of game breaking bugs this hack is only really playable using an emulator & save-stating often, especially before the flagpole because it mainly hangs up when you clear a level. I think this is an old hack but it’d be nice if the author or somebody else fixed the major bugs and polished it up a bit. Just switching the enemy/power-up behavior back to normal, moving lakitu to his regular spot, & shortening the stage clear riff would probably fix most of the game-breaking bugs.
