The 8th Annual Vanilla Level Design Contest: Collaboration Hack

Hack of Super Mario World

Description:

This is SMW Central’s third completed collaboration hack based off of the 2015 Vanilla Level Design Contest (VLDC) It contains 95 levels which you can play in any order you wish - all of them are open from the start except for the secret world, which is unlocked by completing every exit in the game (please read the included text for a few more details).

Note that the hack auto-saves after each completed level, and “marks off” levels as you beat them with a check mark icon. Really good things come to those who are completionists…

Enjoy!

Far From Vanilla

Reviewed By: SenseiKiwi on 18 May 2016

Don’t let the “vanilla” name fool you. This hack is a great variety mix of levels that are anything but ordinary.

While other hacks usually have some consistent themes, this hack combines levels from dozens of authors. It should be no surprise that the quality of levels varies dramatically and that many levels have very unique appearances, challenges, and even mechanics. Some of these mechanics could easily be fleshed out into their own worlds in other hacks. The reward for finding every exit is a set of extra levels that are simply amazing.

That said, brace yourself for frustration if you aim to complete the game. Many levels have rough edges. A handful are obnoxiously harsh or too crazy. For instance, Variety Path stands out for its aggravating length and difficulty. It also took a maddening amount of trial and error to play through Fez 2. The rules against annoying levels should be stricter, even if that means rejecting levels that took noticeable effort to make.

The quality of the music also varies. Some tracks became tiring after a while and I would find myself muting the game. Other tracks were great.

Overall, this collaboration hack is certain to entertain, surprise, and occasionally frustrate.
