Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden is an action role playing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Mashin Hero Wataru Gaiden is a game based on a popular anime series known by the same name minus Gaiden. In this game you play as yourself and you must save Wataru who has been captured by the evil Dakdar.
You’ll travel the world doing various tasks to unlock new areas while trying to locate the Dragon Treasures in order to save Wataru. Each area has its own theme as well as enemies which adds to the overall charm.
The game is fun and interesting in the fact that it is an action game but also has RPG elements that flow very nicely together. The map is overhead view similar to other NES RPG’s of its time while the battles switch over to a side view based screen similar to Zelda 2.

Majin Hero Wataru Gaiden!
It’s a great RPG and it’s a little confusing in parts.
This one features the side scrolling monster battles adding a diverse element to the game. You get lots of magic, lots of items and you will definitely be doing some grinding. It is not your standard Dragon Warrior clone.
Wataru Gaiden does also feature a top notch story.
In this game I made it to about maybe the 50% mark - the part where the game becomes truly free-roaming. The game is quite large and I got very lost.
The drawbacks to this English translation is something you have to understand about the way Japanese themes and stories translate into ideas and words in the English language - sometimes there just isn’t any way to accurately convey what is happening (and trying to do it can even make it bad or worse.)
During the beginning of this free-roaming section the game presented a chain of quest sequences that was really convoluted and just basically impossible to understand what it is you are supposed to do in order to proceed. (You have to pick a flower from an herb underwater for the town and there’s an old man somewhere who doesn’t tell you how to do it.) I had to search a walkthrough online to even understand what the heck was going on.
Anyway Majin Hero Wataru Gaiden qualifies as one of the better RPG games coming from the Famicom and should probably only be played by the most hardcore role playing gamers.
The game also makes you decide whether you want to marry a king’s daughter which is totally in league with things I try to do in video games.
