Hack of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

This is a hack by KABAL_MK of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the Sega Genesis. It adds nearly all playable characters from the Genesis/MegaDrive versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3 -including the absent Sheeva, and also adds new backgrounds, specials, combos, finishing moves, and missing audio samples.

New in v23 (5125)

  • Added more arena backgrounds
  • Improved computer AI
  • Bug Fixes
  • Added more specials, combos, finishing moves.

The following is a list of emulators that work with the hack:

Computer & Retroarch (all platforms using these cores):

  • GenesisPlus-GX
  • Picodrive

Other systems:

  • NeoGenesis version 22+ (Xbox).
  • PicoDrive version 1.51+ (PSP).
  • GenesisPlus-GX version 1.7.4 (Wii) (1.7.5 is incompatible for some reason)
  • MD Emu (Android, iOS)

Some older, but compatible emulators can be found here.

It also works on a real console using a Mega Everdrive flash cartridge.

The patch(s) are in XDelta format, and need to be applied to a ROM in “BIN” format. A “+Tracks” patch is also included which changes some music. It is recommend to use Delta Patcher .

NOTE: The “+Tracks” patch must be applied AFTER the main patch.

ROM / ISO Information:

  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (USA).bin
  • CRC32: 7290770d
  • MD5: 5a129779699f8b388e97c9c0d703d503

Live Up To That "Ultimate" Title

This is one of those extraordinarily ambitious hacks that strives to do a lot, and the results of Kabal_MK’s work are nothing short of breathtaking.

UMKT takes the foundations of UMK3, and adds on everything from MK1 and MK2, and it does so in a way that goes beyond just throwing in past characters and stages. Those fighters are all completely fleshed out with special moves and button combos, which puts them on equal footing with the MK3 characters, and the roster is massive, incorporating multiple versions of characters from across the three games.

Even previously unplayable secret characters are thrown into the mix, and have been given unique movesets so that they don’t end up being the shallow ninja hybrids that they were in their debut titles. For example, MK1 Reptile gains the invisibility move and an acid spit in place of the spear and iceball, along with a full plethora of combos and finishing moves. Some characters like the MK1 Shang Tsung and Khameleon became obscenely powerful, thanks to the robust move pools that they were given, but they make for some fun matches.

My one gripe with this hack is that it has no qualms about putting you up against boss characters, which are treated like standard fighters, so you may find yourself starting off the game with Motaro or Chameleon waiting for you. Granted, they are tuned to be slightly more vulnerable than in past games, but they are still powerhouse characters that deserve their own unique placements in the towers of destiny.

The hack comes with an optional bonus tracks patch, but I personally find the vocals and techno beats of this remixed selection a bit too much of a departure from the standard soundtrack.

Overall, this is a fantastic hack, and the amount of work that went into it is to be admired. It makes for a great standalone game that deserves a solid 8/10.
