Excellent NES RPG and Translation!!!

Reviewed By: firedropdl on 25 Oct 2018

Man… I can’t believe we never got this ported to English back in the day. I would have loved this game as a kid. I’ve played a lot of RPGs in my life and this one was a completely unique experience to me. If I were to explain how the game works to somebody who didn’t know, I’d say Final Fantasy (NES) or Dragon warrior mixed with Final Fantasy Adventure (Gameboy). Secret of Mana would be a decent comparison, but the nature of 8-bit limitations makes that a little far fetched. I was actually pretty amazed that you could have 4 A.I. controlled characters at a time while controlling the hero.

The translation here for the dialogue is great. I didn’t notice any typos or other strangeness. There might be an “S Bomb” or two, but they are earned. :)

My only complaint about the translation would be the strange choice of names for some of the items and a majority of the spells. They don’t seem to mean anything, at least to an English speaking player. I have to imagine this was an intentional choice since the rest of the translation is so good, but I just don’t know what all those names would reference if it was. Not a huge deal though once you experiment around with things and figure it out for yourself.

A little warning for anybody who’s a completionist like me. Don’t try to get all of your characters maxed out at level 30. Shortly after I had maxed 3 of them and was trying to max the other two who were at around level 27, all of the sudden the dungeon I was in started having severe graphical glitches until the point that you get trapped. Since I was in the final castle, the Exit spell wouldn’t even work so I was unable to see if it would be fixed when I went back to the INN. (I didn’t try to replicate this).

I’m guessing that this was an original programming bug that had nothing to do with the translation but I’m not going to go back and play the non-translated version to find out. It’s not a big deal anyhow since that’s very close to the end and I just loaded a new save and went straight to the end of the game. I would actually recommend against grinding that high anyhow since it makes the end game laughable in difficulty.

A review for this translation was a long time coming. Almost 20 years now.

If you’re reading this dreamless, Jair, and [cx]…. Thanks!!!
