I made an unfair review before based on some super subjective issues I had. The author reached out to me to not only thank me for my lack of recommendation but offered to even help me make the changes to make it what I wanted (I had done this before but some of the newer changes would have taken a lot more time to revert/change). But I was not being honest with myself that I wouldn't recommend the romhack after I literally followed it for 2 years on the forum. It deserves recommendations even if its to use as a base for your own personal changes.

Mega Man 4 Voyage

Hack of Mega Man 4

This ROM hack is a major overhaul of Mega Man 4 that changes the original game so much that it can almost be considered a new game altogether. In fact, with the exception of the names of the 8 robot masters, very little is left from the original game.

Mega Man 4 Voyage strives to be one of the most extensive Mega Man ROM hacks to be 100% completed and released to date, with an original storyline, new places to explore, reprogrammed robot master AIs, an improved weapon arsenal, new fortress bosses and an enormous soundtrack with almost 40 original songs to accompany it all. At the same time, it still tries to stick to the “run, jump and shoot” formula of the original classic Mega Man games. The hack should be suitable for veterans and casual players alike; it is more difficult than the original Mega Man 4, but easier than most other ROM hacks and fan games out there.

What started as a one-man project has resulted in a fine collaboration between DurfarC (main author, level design, programming, music), MartsINY (main boss designer, programming) and chiptune composers Golden Shades, RRThiel, Cosmic Gem and MarkTherence. Furthermore, the hack incorporates patches, programming assets and graphics from a wide range of people.

Please check out the README file for more information about the hack, including more detailed credits. Enjoy!

One of the best Mega Man Hacks I've played

Reviewed By: XIII Hearts on 18 Dec 2018

This has honestly been one of the most fun Rom Hack I have played. You did really well with making the bosses more difficult without making them unfair, the music is well done, and I like what you did with the fortress bosses. Though I do have some issues with the game that I hope gets ironed out.

For one, why did Toad Man’s level theme change halfway through? It starts off as an ice stage and then ends with a section from Plug Man’s stage? Why not just keep it an ice level for the whole thing?

I never found a use for the hidden Spike Guard ability. I like the Speed Boost, and I thought we would have to use the Spike Guard to collect valuable items like that 1-Up in Ring Man’s stage behind spikes, but that was the only item ever placed like that. I figure that more mini challenges involving using the Spike Guard to get items like E-Tanks or the like would make it a more relevant ability. As it stands, I just never use it.

When fighting the Weapons’ Archive boss, I don’t understand the inclusion of vanilla Drill Man. This is Mega Man 4, we already fought a Rom Hack Drill Man, and now for some reason we have to fight base game Drill Man? I honestly feel like any other boss that isn’t from Mega Man 4 would have been better.

I did not like the final Wily Capsule. The second phase is out of your reach for a long time, which wouldn’t be that bad if it had a weakness, but it doesn’t. He didn’t care for Rain Flush or Flash Stopper, and all other weapons bounced off him. He’s only weak to the Mega Buster, which means that you have to wait for him to get into range while dodging his hard to avoid attacks. Either give the second phase a weakness, something like Dive Missile so that it can hit him while he’s at the top of the screen, or make him somewhat more open to attacks from the Mega Buster.

With all that said, I still had a blast with this Rom Hack and hope to see it improve in the future.
