Mega Man 4 Voyage

Hack of Mega Man 4

Description:

This ROM hack is a major overhaul of Mega Man 4 that changes the original game so much that it can almost be considered a new game altogether. In fact, with the exception of the names of the 8 robot masters, very little is left from the original game.

Mega Man 4 Voyage strives to be one of the most extensive Mega Man ROM hacks to be 100% completed and released to date, with an original storyline, new places to explore, reprogrammed robot master AIs, an improved weapon arsenal, new fortress bosses and an enormous soundtrack with almost 40 original songs to accompany it all. At the same time, it still tries to stick to the “run, jump and shoot” formula of the original classic Mega Man games. The hack should be suitable for veterans and casual players alike; it is more difficult than the original Mega Man 4, but easier than most other ROM hacks and fan games out there.

What started as a one-man project has resulted in a fine collaboration between DurfarC (main author, level design, programming, music), MartsINY (main boss designer, programming) and chiptune composers Golden Shades, RRThiel, Cosmic Gem and MarkTherence. Furthermore, the hack incorporates patches, programming assets and graphics from a wide range of people.

Please check out the README file for more information about the hack, including more detailed credits. Enjoy!

Amazing music, great fun...until the last few levels

This is a masterfully-designed Mega Man rom hack that feels almost 100% new except for the robot masters (but they all behave very differently). It was a real joy to play and I was legitimately excited as I saw cool throwbacks to past Mega Man games. Some of the robot masters are very hard to pick up on a pattern (and they are timed to punish you for a single wrong jump in the boss fights). But like all Mega Man games, with the right weapons, you can make quick work of them all.

The biggest disappointment (and I will sadly say it was a BIG disappointment for me, maybe not for others) is the extreme boss difficulty in the later Wily levels, particularly the tail-end. Good luck beating it without save-states or spending 10 game overs memorizing it. Add to the fact that everyone is emulating it and there’s input lag on most emulators in addition to the input lag on the average TV and it can get annoying. The majority of the game had a very reasonable difficulty (even what I would call “easy” at times being a seasoned player).

The thing that I found the most fun was the traps and the pacing of the game. This really has better level design than the original games, and that’s saying something. There wasn’t much wasted space. The music was terrific as well.

My only recommendation would be to tone down the last few multi-form boss battles or provide more E-tanks because it’s annoyingly hard in my opinion. But for those that want a tough challenge, you can’t go wrong with this. It’s not as advanced as Rockman 4: Minus Infinity, but it has some VERY surprising, impressive, and advanced hacking and it feels more like a real Mega Man game than Rockman 4: Minus Infinity.

I felt it was A+ 10/10 in the first half of the game, but by the end, I can’t give it a perfect score because the difficulty was too hard for the average player.

Played on SNES Classic with RetroArch using the QuickNES emulation core using the stock SNES controllers and also an 8BitDo N30 2.4G wireless controller.
