Final Fantasy VI Relocalization Project

Hack of Final Fantasy III

The Final Fantasy VI Relocalization Project is an attempt to “relocalize” the Super Nintendo game Final Fantasy VI in a way that the original localization team might have done, if they had more time, ROM space, and freedom from censorship to do better.

This hack features a completely new script based heavily on the GBA translation, completely uncensored graphics, a fancy new font, dozens of bugfixes, full descriptions for all items and spells, and a variety of other small fixes and tweaks to make this the best possible version of Final Fantasy VI without altering the actual gameplay in an appreciable way.

Archive contains patches for both headered and unheadered ROMs.

Great writing, minor issue

Reviewed By: Chicken Knife on 18 Feb 2019

I’ve been a fan of this hack project awhile, preferring the author’s adherence to GBA conventions over that of Woosley. The standout thing here is the writing of the script. The quality is stunning at times and this really is one of my favorite fan translations out there. Everything comes across to me as fluid and natural sounding.

Besides the writing we have lots of bugfixes and a couple gameplay changes. Bugfixes are always a great thing. Some of the gameplay changes are not so great however. The two major ones I am aware of are the Esper stat and spell rate alterations as well as Cyan’s sword tech change being sped up majorly.

It looks like the Esper changes have been nearly all addressed in the latest update. I’m great with that decision. The problem remains with Cyan’s sword tech / bushido gauge however. It has has been sped to to the point where it fully charges in the blink of an eye. First of all, selecting a specific skill is now actually difficult because the speed makes the process quite imprecise. Secondly, he can access his top bushido skills in a second or two which makes him join the ranks of Sabin or Edgar as a very overpowered character. Imbalance was always an issue in FF6 and we don’t need another god tier character. I have heard complaints about how slow Cyan’s bushido power is over the years, but I’ve never had a problem. You just have to input commands in quick succession for the other three characters and let him charge while they execute their commands. I could even live with a speed increase if it were subtle but this one is just too extreme.
