Mega Man 4 Voyage

Hack of Mega Man 4

Description:

This ROM hack is a major overhaul of Mega Man 4 that changes the original game so much that it can almost be considered a new game altogether. In fact, with the exception of the names of the 8 robot masters, very little is left from the original game.

Mega Man 4 Voyage strives to be one of the most extensive Mega Man ROM hacks to be 100% completed and released to date, with an original storyline, new places to explore, reprogrammed robot master AIs, an improved weapon arsenal, new fortress bosses and an enormous soundtrack with almost 40 original songs to accompany it all. At the same time, it still tries to stick to the “run, jump and shoot” formula of the original classic Mega Man games. The hack should be suitable for veterans and casual players alike; it is more difficult than the original Mega Man 4, but easier than most other ROM hacks and fan games out there.

What started as a one-man project has resulted in a fine collaboration between DurfarC (main author, level design, programming, music), MartsINY (main boss designer, programming) and chiptune composers Golden Shades, RRThiel, Cosmic Gem and MarkTherence. Furthermore, the hack incorporates patches, programming assets and graphics from a wide range of people.

Please check out the README file for more information about the hack, including more detailed credits. Enjoy!

How is This Just a Hack?

Reviewed By: Mother Kojiro on 30 Mar 2019

This hack is extremely impressive from a technical perspective; it is today what Dragoon X Omega was 15 years ago. This has new graphics, new music (all original compositions, I believe; I only kinda recognized one song), new enemies, new boss behavior, new weapon behavior, new just about everything! There are plenty of people absolutely gushing about how incredible this hack is, and I could go on all night, so I’ll keep it brief. What’s most impressive about this hack is that it feels like a whole new game. Yes, I’m sure you’ve heard that before, but really, if you changed the robot masters, this could be released as a brand new Mega Man game; there were moments that I forgot what robot master’s stage I was even playing, it’s so radically different. The most impressive thing about the level design, itself, though, is that even the stage gimmicks are completely new; they aren’t just remixed stages from the original with a nice new coat of paint. There are a few familiar faces, but the Quick Beams don’t instantly kill you and give you a warning, and the disappearing blocks are laid out in an engaging way, so I didn’t find myself trying to skip them with Rush Jet. There wasn’t as much of the surreal weirdness that I usually go for in a hack, but it was so well designed that I barely noticed. If you like Mega Man, give this a try, plain and simple.
