Standard yet enjoyable RPG

First of all.

I would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to all the translation and hacking teams for the wonderful work they do. I really appreciate all the effort you put to bring us the chance to play all these games that never saw the light outside japan. so please keep on!!!

I’m a big fan of console RPG games mostly SNES, GBA, PS1 and PS2 games. so I’ll be reviewing games that I’ve played and finished.

I’m using the Snes9X emulator and I recommed to always use its lastest release.

Aretha developed by Japan Art Media (JAM) and published by Yanoman Corp in 1993 tells the story of a young girl in her journey to unravel her origins, the plot goes around some magic rings called Aretha Rings.

In terms of graphics the game does pretty well for the year it was released. Somehow reminds me of the Dragon Quest games, the sprites are crispy and detailed with anime-like portraits, the towns feel a little improvised but you won’t get lost so is fine. The world map features the usual array of towns, mountains, caves and oceans.

The gameplay is basically what you find in any RPG, turn-based battles in a Dragon Quest setting where you fight monsters from a first person view.

However the developers tried to stand out of the rest by dividing the battle scene in four planes, you’ll be fighting enemy parties in front of you, behind you, at your left and a your right making you feel surrounded

You can have a maximun of four members in your party, at the end of the battle you get the expected amount of experience, money and gems… what are gems anymway…???

The characters get new abilities as you level them up. There are two types of characters: those who rely on pure strenght and magic users. To my surprise both types are well balanced making the gameplay smooth and free of any frustration. In exchange for this you get a high encounter rate.

The storyline is pretty simple and linear but with enough turns to keep your fingers busy, you won’t be stuck for hours looking where to go or whom to talk.

As I said before after each battle you collect gems which can be used in towns for item synthesis. I didn’t dig too much in this feature since I’ve never been a fan of synthesis in RPG games.

The only point where I think the game falls a little short is in the music, there’s only five or six tunes for the background music, however if you are the type of person who doesn’t care much about the background music you’ll be fine otherwise you’ll be tired soon of the same music in every town or dungeon.

Finally the patch works seamlessly, no crashes or glitches, nothings seems to be out of place. all the items, monster names and dialogs are fully translated.

So here’s my score for Aretha: 7.5/10
