Genuinely unsettling.

I think every Pokemon fan everywhere has heard of the fabled Black version in some form. Nameless creepypasatas have been created in it’s honor. It’s kind of iconic.

Admittedly, I didn’t have great expectations going in. I’m quite familiar with Generation 1. I’m old enough to remember the days of Pokegods such as Pikablu and Doomsday. Even still, I felt compelled to try this out anyway.

At first, I was a bit confused. I had to look up the creepypasta before I realized that Ghost was in my team right after I picked Charmander. I was not prepared for how overpowered Ghost would be. Trainers and Pokemon alike were akin to cotton. I gasped with excitement when the screen went black for a little while after Curse was used. I was floored when I saw that I could use Curse on opposing Trainers.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a part that had me laughing heartily. If you recall, there’s a point in Mt. Moon where you have to choose between the Helix fossil and the Dome fossil. Thanks to Curse, I was able to do away with that Trainer and claim BOTH fossils.

There was another time where Curse proved to be very useful. I’ve never liked Silph Co. I don’t like those warping tiles. Thankfully, Ghost was able to Curse the member of Team Rocket that was guarding the Card Key.

To be fair, though, this version was not without it’s faults. There’s a Blackbelt in Victory Road that I used Curse on. I found that I couldn’t walk any further on the path. An invisible object was in my way. I wound up restarting my file. On the second time through, I made sure not to Curse any Trainers in that area. On the bright side, I was able to get back to that point within 30 minutes.

If you haven’t already, I would recommend reading and/or listening to the Creepypasta this is based on.

I’m reticent to spoil the ending of this romhack because I found it genuinely unsettling. Just read the Creepypasta and follow along. You’ll see what I mean.

All in all, I have no problem recommending this.
