Hack of Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Description:

“KERPLOSHH!” AND LIKE THAT YOUR CRUISE ENDED ON THE SHORE OF A STRANGE ISLAND. CERTAINLY, NOT THE ONE WITH THE 6.5 STAR SPA RESORT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL YEAR LONG. WELL, THE RESCUE TEAM IS PROBABLY ALREADY ON ITS WAY… OR IS IT?

Completely new levels with a bunch of different styles, more than a dozen new music tracks and even more sound effects, many new features and a few surprises is what we put into this hack, making it a completely different game than Alex Kidd in Miracle World. This is what began its life as a competition entry named “Ma Kai Quest”. Get ready to help our heroine to make her vacation enjoyable in the end and complete all 17 levels. But will completing them be enough to succeed?

Important: YOU WILL NEED A ROM OF ALEX KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD (V1 or V1.1, no V0, V1.0, no Brazilian or BIOS version) AND A TOOL TO APPLY IPS PATCH FILES (like “Lunar IPS”).

CUTE, delicately designed and SPICY

Reviewed By: TheBlackFalcon on 20 Jan 2020

I’ve never ventured to play a SMS title but given the hack description and the considerable time the authors team decided to put on this work, I decided to give it a complete shot.

This is a very classical one-direction side scroller based on very simple mechanics and indie-styled cuteness overload within an 8-bit environment following an innocent and funny story: You happen to be this small happy sorceress that travels through an entire island killing small baddies, using potions granting some cool powers and collecting money in order to leave at the end.

Each single environmental arrangement, as silly, simple, stupid and innocent as you might think it looks, is CAREFULLY designed to arise a series of small 2D skill problems to solve through timing and overall character control. This is a constant and recurrent trait from the authors through all the levels without exception and largely remains the major imprint that reveals the amount of dedication they took to conform their work. There’s no single part of the game which wasn’t left down in this sense.

Lakes, mountains, forests, cliffs, rivers, snow, a factory… A complete go-around with very well characterized visuals and decent soundtracks given the retro-environment with some interesting secret bifurcations breaking a little bit the linearity. Some small funny conversations. Swimming and Flappy Bird-like flying mechanics included!

Despite the simple mechanics, physics are as complete as they can with considerable inertial effects and jump sensitivity thresholds. As a matter of fact this is the base for all the challenge scheme design in the game: your work will to master with considerable dexterity these variables in order to react properly in vast variety of situations.

Considering this context, while the visuals constantly scream vanilla, it should be noted this work remains far from easy, and will have even experimented players sweating a little bit in many parts of the game and carefully re-thinking their resource strategy to make our little witch to survive at long term. There will be many times in which all your lives can just relentlessly shred in less than one minute if you’re not paying attention.

The only remark I would have is that the replay value is abruptly introduced at the end by literally telling you that you didn’t do enough to get the good ending, forcing you to go through all the adventure again in a more conscious manner (It would be highly unlikely to to get it right at the first run). While indeed it remains interesting to re-experience this indie-cuteness, based on the first experience I can infer that it would require an extremely well-executed and thoughtful run in order to achieve the requirements, with a high probably of needing save-states beforehand. I haven’t tried personally, thought. Might do it later.

Overall, by all means, please enjoy this well-crafted 8-bit work.
