Voyage - A Sorceress' Vacation

Hack of Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Description:

“KERPLOSHH!” AND LIKE THAT YOUR CRUISE ENDED ON THE SHORE OF A STRANGE ISLAND. CERTAINLY, NOT THE ONE WITH THE 6.5 STAR SPA RESORT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL YEAR LONG. WELL, THE RESCUE TEAM IS PROBABLY ALREADY ON ITS WAY… OR IS IT?

Completely new levels with a bunch of different styles, more than a dozen new music tracks and even more sound effects, many new features and a few surprises is what we put into this hack, making it a completely different game than Alex Kidd in Miracle World. This is what began its life as a competition entry named “Ma Kai Quest”. Get ready to help our heroine to make her vacation enjoyable in the end and complete all 17 levels. But will completing them be enough to succeed?

Important: YOU WILL NEED A ROM OF ALEX KIDD IN MIRACLE WORLD (V1 or V1.1, no V0, V1.0, no Brazilian or BIOS version) AND A TOOL TO APPLY IPS PATCH FILES (like “Lunar IPS”).

A charming and well-designed platformer

As a preface I should mention that I’m hardly familiar with the Master System and that I haven’t played Alex Kidd in Miracle World. As I understand it, almost every aspect was changed in this rom hack compared to the original game but I can’t comment on the exact nature of the changes obviously. I can comment however that I found the result of the development team’s work entirely convincing. Every aspect of it shows that the developers know their craft.

The graphics are beautiful! The art style and colour choices are very appealing to me. I’m also fond of the sorceress as a protagonist! The character design as well as the animations are pleasing! An example of the care to details that the developers put into the game: if you turn left it’s not just the sprite mirrored but a distinct graphic, the sorceress always keeps her staff in the left hand. As far as I can tell this is different from Alex Kidd in which the sprite is simply flipped.

The controls are very responsive, and the physics impressive. The levels are clearly very thoughtfully designed, with varied challenges and scenery. The game is not easy and it often requires careful planning, but with a few exceptions the difficulty is not too exaggerated. Powerups are a bit scarce though, especially since you lose the ability to shoot after dying (and some parts such as the boss battles are very tough without projectiles).

The songs are generally very short, too short for my liking. I don’t know if this is due to hardware or engine limitations. The more upbeat songs like the one in the first levels are not my cup of tea. Some other tunes I quite liked, my favourite song is the one in the rainy level. The music in the forest levels is also lovely and fits the level very well!

Many of the levels manage to create a beautiful atmosphere. The forest levels in particular are my favourite. The music works very well here and the night sky with the scintillating stars is a beautiful sight. The snow level is another personal favourite.

In conclusion, as should be clear from the above, the game is clearly recommended.
