The Bob-omb Mafia

Hack of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Description:

“The Bob-omb Mafia has welshed out on a deal with Bowser and it is up to Mario to retrieve five of Bowser’s shells from the bob-ombs. In this hack Mario–with the help of Mallow–must defeat a series of bosses including a large Thwomp, two clowns, and a forest witch, and defeat the diminutive mafia boss who is under the guard of two large bob-bombs and a vicious, bloodthirsty ant. There is also one puzzle room, as well as a few side-quests.”

This is a much improved version over 2.0 which itself was infinitely superior to the awful mess that was v1.0 (v1.0, I’m afraid, has permanently scarred the reputation of the hack). There are no new monsters or areas, but many changes have been made.

Welcome to version 2.3 of “The Bob-omb Mafia”. This new and improved version has more balanced mechanics as well as a more linear storyline. Monsters give more experience, so less “grinding” is necessary to hasten leveling up. Minor changes include slightly weaker monsters early in the game and some script mods. Also some items and treasures have been added, changed or moved around to balance the gameplay. Changes from v2.2 include a new title screen, a switch that needs to be hit in order to access Baba Yaga’s room, and a minimum of 3 instead of 5 battles with Radish.

In other words, this hack is both easier to play and faster to complete. The player will not have to guess what must be done next, because v2.2 places roadblocks to certain areas as a means of guiding them to where they need to go next (ie. a more linear storyline). Certain items must be acquired to enter new areas, and the difficulty of the monsters in these areas should reflect the player’s current level. The final boss, however, is of the same level of difficulty as in v2.0 but still not impossible (in fact, quite easy with enough Bane Bombs, Ice Bombs, Red Essences and Power Blasts). Some item rewards have been switched around and/or changed as a way to sustain a balanced level of difficulty. A couple of items were added to the town shop, and two bugs I noticed in v2.0 were fixed: you can no longer run away from the green/blue wigglers, and you cannot skip the radish by jumping over it using a flashing dog as a platform. This hack also includes tile and solidity mods in the main town area for the three locked doors. That means the mod feature in Lazy Shell works without crashing.

The new version of this hack has all (presumably) bugs fixed, usage of world maps, new bosses, better strategy, two new spells, several new attacks, more organized and balanced gameplay, a more linear storyline, easier early battles, and faster leveling up.

FEATURES:

  • 35 entirely new levels
  • 50+ new overworld events
  • 100+ new dialogues
  • 12 new bosses
  • several new items
  • 2 new spell animations
  • actual game strategy

This hack most predominantly demonstrates the capabilities of the level editor and event script editor portions of the editor.

A great mini-adventure in 2.3

Reviewed By: Sosuko on 03 Aug 2020

Tip: Read the “readme” that comes with the game. The Tips given are very helpful to beating the game and finding everything

Based on all the other reviews and the creator’s own admission, this game was apparently a bit of a mess in terms of balance and direction in the past, but my experience with the most recent version was pretty good. Sure, you can get unlucky with your first encounter and have to start the whole game over since you hadn’t reached the first save point yet, but once you get rolling, the game is fair in its challenge and design. It’s a little rough around the edges, but it still has a good amount of content and challenge to make the entire journey an enjoyable one. Unlike most other SMRPG hacks, this one even comes with a short but well-told story to it. The environments, characters, and dialogue are realized very well despite only being able to use palette-swapped versions of the base game’s assets.

In terms of gameplay, there is a fair mix of combat, exploration, and puzzles, the latter of which is awesome to see in a hack. It’s satisfying to solve some of the unique puzzles throughout the game, and it makes the ultimate goal of the hack (collecting all 5 shells) not as simple as grind, get the best items, and beat the last boss. Unfortunately, exploration is pretty linear, since the author put in a series of checks and blockers that prevent you from going to a difficult area/boss before you are meant to. I understand why it was done, but given the abundance of save points, I personally would’ve preferred to be allowed to roam a little more (even into areas with monsters that would one shot me). Lastly, in terms of the combat, the game provides you with Mallow early on, and after playing many solo Mario hacks, it was great to have 2 characters to provide some much-needed depth to combat. Though you certainly do need to reach certain LVs before taking on some bosses (without cheesing it via Super Jumps), the amount of EXP gained in battle is very high, so minimum grinding is actually needed. You also have easy access to super strong/useful items as the game progresses, making it easy to boost your FP and get items useful for taking down the stronger bosses.

Last thing worth mentioning is that though the final boss is very difficult, the winning strategy is basically given away in the “readme”. You can also acquire as many Red Essences as you want at the end game, which can make it much easier.

Overall, I had a great time playing this hack and hope that any who might’ve been burned by earlier versions gives this most recent one a fair try!
