A nice hack with passion for detail.Reviewed By: Poe on 14 Aug 2020
When I heard for the first time about a hack of Super Mario World where Toad is playing the central character I was quite excited. As I can remeber, since the year one, Toad has always been the little dumb bag carrier of Princess Peach who stood in the last row. Though he’s obviously some kind of mushroom he was in the Mushroom Kingdom itself just the eternal loser. But things have changed with this hack, at least for me …
The level design is well done and consists of different Mario games and others which I didnt’t know before. As in Super Mario Wold you have to play through different worlds and levels to advance to the castle of each world. Some levels are easy, some of average difficulty and some are hard - especially some bosses. In most cases you need to find out first how to defeat the boss or what its weak spot is. For that reason I claim that you need more than one try to defeat each boss. Besides some of them look a little strange, or better said what they are.
In my opinion the music fits to the game very well either. Many sounds were quite familiar to me like Donkey Kong, Super Metroid or Kirby. Especially the sound of “Brinstar” in some caves gave me the creeps and still jingles in my ears.
All in all the game is a lot of fun and worth playing it, or at least you should give it a try when you’re a fan of Mario game designs and of course of Toad. However it lacks a little regarding the story. But since it’s no role playing game I have no problems to overlook that issue. It doesn’t decline the fun factor at all.
