Elvira's Monster Party

Hack of Monster Party

Description:

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the horror hostess played by Cassandra Peterson, stars in this hack of Bandai’s Monster Party for the NES / Famicom.

With a flaming sword to deflect attacks (like a baseball bat), and the ability to transform into a bat-winged (and bat-throwing) monster, Elvira “the Queen of Halloween” is ready for action! So batter up and fight through eight stages in a parody world filled with familiar movie monsters.

The player character has been replaced with Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, who also appears in the intro and outro cutscenes with new text. Boss text has also been altered.

This is based on the restoration and translation of Parody World Monster Party, released by Stardust Crusaders. http://www.romhacking.net/translations/3115/

Concept and Elvira graphics were created by Sil3nt_J.

Various graphics, text and Romhacking by Garrett Gilchrist (tygerbug).

This is a patch for Monster_Party_(J)_(Prototype).zip (256 KB)

Fun after all

What is the best thing I can say about this hack? Probably, that I would have never played the original game without it.

It’ s a risky decision use a bad game as a basis for a project. This one in particular is a poor game in all its aspects, and it feels like something unfinished, although it includes many references and jokes about horror classics (”The Fry” scene made me laugh genuinely). That’s probably why this hack works, and it fits perfectly with the personality of Elvira, the horror movie hostess.

Personally, I recommend giving this hack a chance, even if it’s just to have a few laughs.

And if I can afford to make a suggestion, the author’s talent with pixel art is remarkable, but it would be interesting to see him start a project with a great game as a base (yes, I found Cobra Kai’s hack fun and fresh, but the serious flaws in the gameplay of the original game are there, and that’s frustrating).

Keep giving what you got, buddy!
