Hack of Final Fantasy IV

This ROM hack alters the game into a story mostly centered on characters from at least one other game in the Final Fantasy series, notably Celes and Terra.

The game was modified to a large degree. Both graphics (mainly character graphics) and text were modified. One character was even changed into a totally new character.

The text was changed from a base script of J2E’s translation of the game. The game is now more female related. It is also a bit lesbian in nature, centering on the relationship of Celes and Terra.

To sum up this hack in a word: unnecessary. There is very little done in the hack aside from changing the character sprites (very lazily in some instances) and minor dialogue changes to reflect the new characters and their gender–and a few FFIII/VI references as well (mostly in the beginning).

I’ll start by saying that I haven’t played FFII/IV in a long time, so my memory of the game’s finer points may be fuzzy, but I’m pretty sure this translation is questionable at best. While the story is mostly the same, there are some really poor choices for naming here. The worst of which are the spells and items. Since most don’t have a description, you are left to guess what they do or experiment and see if you can figure it out. For example, Celes learns the spell ‘Rabur’ when she becomes a Paladin; ‘Rabur’ is the Peep spell. Rydia learns a spell called ‘Dejon’ as well–that is the Warp spell. The most painful one was your healing spells, which are all called ‘Keal’ for some reason.

The big advertised point of the game is a celebration of the lesbian relationship of Celes and Terra. Honestly, since the dialogue is mostly the same, there is hardly any hint of this theme aside from the two or three scenes where Rosa and Cecil hugged (and kissed?) in the original. Several other party members were changed as well: Kain is a woman named Azmyth, Yang is Mei-lin, and Edge is Kumaro. The big issue with these changes is that they are mostly ignored. There is no story impact to the changes and little dialogue changed as well. The only exception is Kumaro, who is the Prince of the Moogle Kingdom–except that he’s the only moogle.

Building off of that, the sprite-work is very lazy as well. The overworld sprites for the new characters don’t match the colors of the characters’ portraits or battle sprites. Azmyth has white hair and black armor in battle, but her overworld sprite has blue hair and blue armor. Kumaro suffers from a similar issue as well.

Overall, I just can’t justify this hack unless you are desperate for a slightly different version of FFII/IV. There are far better hacks out there that are much more worthy of your time.

This hack is a very passable experience. Virtually nothing was changed in the story aside from the characters’ gender and a few references to FFIII/VI thrown in. I recommend skipping this hack unless you are desperate for another playthrough of the same old game with a few different sprites.
