Phantasy Star III General Improvement

Hack of Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom

Description:

The purpose of this hack is to mitigate many of the flaws of Phantasy Star III in order to create an overall play experience more similar to that of Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star IV. This attempt is made through minor adjustments to the presentation, using the naming conventions from the other games, increasing the number of lore references to the other games, and more. Please see the readme for more complete details.

The script was also significantly expanded in order to fill some holes in the story, address gaps in logic that otherwise go unexplained, and add more flavor by way of new non-player characters.

We’re currently on version 1.1, the second release of this hack. 1.1 corrects a few typos and also changes some enemy and item names to be more consistent with my Phantasy Star II and IV hacks. Otherwise, it’s unchanged from 1.0.

Thank you to everyone who tries this hack! Despite how it may sound, this patch is very much intended as a love letter to a favorite game.

Please note, the patched ROM will need to have its checksum corrected before it will play. The suggested fix for this is to use FixChecksum.exe.

The Definitive Way to Play PSIII

Reviewed By: Twist on 07 Jul 2020

Let’s not mince words: PSIII is fairly bad game that’s aged terribly. But, if you’re a completionist like me who decided to play the entire PSIII tetralogy, you need this hack to make PSIII at least somewhat bearable. The revised texts give personality to what were originally very bland characters, and the new chest contents mean you’re actually glad you didn’t spend 15 minutes getting to a dead end in a dungeon to find a chest, because there won’t be an antidote in it.

BEWARE, however, there are still some bugs present in v1.1. Maybe it’s my patching, but the game would reset if 1) A defending character was hit in battle (Luckily, you literally never need to defend in this game), 2) Going to the second floor in the east-most house in the town of Data Memory.
