Dragon Warrior

Nintendo Entertainment System

Game Description:

The first in the long running series of games, beginning with the Nintendo Entertainment System and spanning the SNES, the Gameboy, and even the Playstation, as well as having mini-spinoffs which are a lot like Pokemon.

This, the original Dragon Warrior, starts you off in the throne room of the King of Tantegal Castle. He names you the descendant of the legendary Erdrick, who once possesed the Ball of Light. It has been stolen, the Dragonlord’s minions roam the lands, and the Princess is kidnapped. You, the descendant of the legendary hero, must confront evil and save the continent.

This game features a single-character interface with single-monster battles. Do not think this means it will be easy…you can easily go in over your head. You must make sure to buy equipment, as for some odd reason, trained descendants of heros do not have any starting equipment.

This game was once released by Nintendo along with subscriptions of Nintendo Power magazine, so it is not extremely rare. However, it is a good place to start learning of the series, as it began everything. Also, the rest of them are considered hard to find. If you get one, consider yourself lucky!

Translation Description:

The three Swedish letters Å, Ä and Ö and å, ä and ö are not actually selectable for character names, even though they appear in the list. There are also some other minor issues.

Helping me learn Swedish

I downloaded this translation because I am studying Swedish and I wanted some native reading material that was fun.

Dragon Warrior is a classic game that I love, so I was very happy to find a Swedish translation available. Although I am not a native speaker of Swedish, I am able to play through the game at a leisurely pace and as far as I can tell the language is natural. It doesn’t appear to be archaic language like the English version of the game (eg: thou art dead) which is a plus in my book.

Some item/spell names are truncated (like the word for “armor”), but other than that nothing has tripped me up. Highly recommended for any learner of Swedish.
